Surgery, schmurgery

Anesthesia is so weird. One second you're all, "Hey doc, love the new clogs," and then next, you're like, "Where am I?" "Why am I not wearing a bra?"

And it's so nauseating to try and get conscious. Usually I'm happy to tune out of life or discussions about other people's vacations, but when you want to tune in, it can hurt. Focus. Focus. Oops, sleeping again. Talk to the nurse so she thinks you're a brave little girl. Crap, you just closed your eyes halfway through something about her son and a missing pancake.

In fact, I'm getting nauseous just remembering the experience, which I've had way too many times in my (not as) young (as it used to be) life.

But the good news is I'm OK. The even better news is I didn't really need the surgery as the problem apparently resolved itself in the two months between discovery and waking up at 5 a.m. to go to the hospital. (Am I being too vague? I had a mass in my uterus that was causing me excruciating pain, probably related to my molar pregnancy. Still confused? A uterus is where a baby grows. Ask your mom how it got in there.)

This is not the first time I've had an unnecessary procedure. There was the time on my LDS mission when I had my appendix taken out for fun. Just imagine coming out of anesthesia to have a doctor tell you in Spanish that the appendix was extraordinarily long but fine, and that he "poked" around in other areas that looked "strange," but resisted the urge to operate on them.

For the record, I never went back to that doctor and removed the stitches myself. See, I am a brave little girl.

Anyway, I still have a bad case of the cramps, but it's nothing a few hundred Advil can't cure. (That was for my mom. She thinks everyone is addicted to drugs, including vitamins. But seriously, 8-9 Advil do the trick.)

How many Advil do you take?

i'll be honest, i gave up on the tylenol, advil, midol attempts to cure my really bad cramps that creep up every few months... but half a loritab does the trick (i assume it's not an addiction if it's half of one every 90 days or so). but really, it works for me. just buzzed enough (ok... now that sounds kind of like an addiction) to numb the pain, but not crazy enough to make me feel too loopy. though, i still don't drive 'cause i'm just that paranoid. but midol... that stuff freaks me out. the caffeine makes my heart race. advil is like taking a sugar pill when it comes to cramps, but it's good to know the magic number is 8 or 9 for future reference. :)

and so sorry to hear about your unnecessary surgery(s) <--ya, that doesn't really work. i think it's pretty much my biggest nightmare to have parts removed that don't need to be. i'm still pissed my dentist convinced me to have my wisdom teeth out. anyway, hope you feel better soon!

p.s. i promise i'm not racing to be the first person to comment on your blog every morning... but it pretty much sums up my east-coast life right now... waiting for the rest of the world to wake up. :) it's nice to have a friend in the morning, so thanks!

Unnecessary surgery? Gotta love doctors sometimes. I know they mean well, but COME ON! And as a fellow girl who has had her appendix out (the old fashioned way, with a big incision) but it was definitely necessary, I would have been very, very angry to be told after the fact that it was "extraordinarily long but fine."

Have you watched the show Hopkins at all? It makes me never want to go to the hospital again.

I don't usually take advil (I had ulcer issues in high school and was advised to avoid that one since it can be hard on your stomach). But my current drug of choice is unisom - while I am taking it w/ B6 to hopefully curb my nausea, it really has helped me sleep better too. So... if you have a hard night, I highly recommend it :) And my pharmacist friend assures me it's not addictive... (it's a sleep aid)

one does the trick for me.

i am SO glad that you are alive. (and as witty as ever.) love you mrs. dub!

i don't use tylenol or advil... they don't seem to work as well as motrin which i usually take 3 of, but only if im really superly in pain. :)

Glad your doing ok! I try to avoid the drugs, including during birth! The only time I take them is when I have a bad migrane...worse than birth pain...and them I take 4-5 advil! It's totally fine...acording to my friend who used to be a nurse!

wow, what a relief. so glad everything seems to have resolved itself! keep taking it easy, though. i've only ever needed 3 advil. luckily my hubby knows something about pain remediation (he does root canals for a living). when i've had more pain than 3 will handle (c-sections), i've asked for the real drugs.

So glad you are okay. And I'm totally with you on the anesthesia. Is there anything worse than being completely unable to control your body? I do not like it. I too have experienced it way too many times for my liking and have the unfortunate side-effect of extreme nausea for several days after. ANYWAY... that's so crazy that the surgery was unnecessary.
I'm with Zeeny on the drug issue. I don't ever like to take anything. But for headaches, I take 3 advil. My husband thinks "2 tylenol will do the trick." And he wonders why his headaches never go away. He also weighs 100 pounds more than I do, and I'm convinced he should be taking at least 4 advil.

I'm glad you are ok. I was wondering what was going on.

As far as drugs go I refuse to take anything this pregnancy because I am a little paranoid. Tylenol sucks. It doesn't do anything. When I'm not pregnant (which I can't remember when I wasn't) I took lots of advil.

Glad you're well!

Um, I'm a 8-9 Advil kinda girl as well. I'll bump it up to Excedrin, but, that's only when I don't want to sleep, as Excedrin hypes me up to no end.

Take care!

So ... if everyone suddenly shows up at your place, it's only ... coincidently ... an intervention.

I'm impressed that you are already blogging after the unneccessary surgery! How impressive. I think I'd be too mad to write for a few days! Glad that all is well.

And I just wanted to say thanks for the pics of Miss Dub the past few posts. She's so cute!!

I don't think I have ever taken more than 2 advil. I don't use it much. But luckily, I never get headaches, cramps, etc. If it is labor pains though...then I want them to give me everything they got!

I've only taken 4 advil ok - I'll alternate it will 2 tylenol if that doesn't do the trick. But when I have cramps - I haven't found the trick - and they've been getting worse (YEAH!) as I'm getting older.

I will take excedrin for headaches (which thankfully I don't get as much as I did when I was younger)but not during my cycle - no asprin or caffeine then (the caffeine will make my cramps worse).

Maybe I should bump up the advil/ibuprofin a little. OR I can ask about this loritab stuff :)

mrs. dub i'm relieved that everything is okay. you should take all the advil you need and and remember that you're insanely loved. i hope that helps the cramping.

Mary, if you are planning the intervention I'm in. I'll provide the hats and napkins if you provide the lecture. Oh, and I'll try to think of some party games as well. Let me know the count on the RSVP.

Oh I love your description of anesthesia. When my husband was recovering from a minor procedure a few years ago, I got to watch him ask the same nurse for a glass of cranberry juice about four separate times; each time he thought it was the first and he was so confused as to why I was laughing at him.

Advil is my drug of choice, except for headaches and then I reach for Excedrin. And Dr. Pepper.

I hope you're feeling better.

I have really bad cramps due to endometriosis and one month I realized between aspirin, tylenol and advil I had taken 15 pills in an afternoon. I prefer Advil liquid gels now.
Oh and as for the missing bra thing? I got a kidney removed when I was 9 and I woke up to find betadine all of the way down on my legs, which means they took off my underwear! I was so horrified as a little kid.

i almost always take 3 of any pain killer... my hubbs isn't as fond of that as i am. if my head/knee/foot ache isn't as bad, i'll only take 2, but normally it's 3 b/c i let the pain persist to the point of OUCH!

oh, and i once had this foot thing that resurfaces every so often, and my dr. at the time told me to take 4 aleves every couple hours, so i know that it's okay if there's a pain... it's not okay if you're just takin' the pills for kicks.

mrs. dub, if you are taking 9 advils at one time just for kicks, mr. dub/mary, count me in on the intervention rsvp. i'll bring the ice cream cake.

ugh, i didn't realize that crust collector was logged on... that was me.

advil does not do anything for me. i take 800 mg of ibuprofen 3 times a day on account of my headaches and it seems to do the trick, although, if i ever get shot, i'll bleed out real quickly.

Advil schmadvil. Give me percocet any time. Feel better!

My daughter directed me to your post today. Sorry about the schmurgery! Regarding Advil...beware! 2 years ago I was heavy on Advil to reduce inflammation (and pain) in my neck due to compressed discs. At my Dr's direction, I took 3-4 Advil 3-4 times a day. I ended up with a bleeding ulcer - unaware that Advil is as hard on your insides as Aspirin. 2 endoscopies, upper GI series and 3 MRI's later, I am practically Advil free. Hope you feel better soon!

Well, I'm glad you're okay even if it did take an unnecessary surgery to find that out. :)

I'm not into drugs myself. If I've got monster cramps or something I'll pop a Midol, but in general I steer clear. I took Lortab once after getting my wisdom teeth out and HATED how loopy it made me feel, so it was all ibuprofen after that.

I used to take 4 advil on occasion. It gave me an ulcer and made it bleed. But that caused them to find the tumor the ulcer was on. So is that good or bad?

Funny though, since I've been banned from any painkiller and even baby aspirin therapy for 5 months, none of my pain has been any worse than when I used them. Maybe being off caffeine and carbonation, too, has helped.

Of course, we'll see how I feel about the morphine, oxycotin, and percocet after the surgery in a couple weeks. I may make you look stone sober.

Mr. Dub, count my RSVP, do you need cough syrup for the punch.

Wow. Glad you're okay! That's crazy. I have to admit I have to be careful with the percussets after birth. That is such GOOD stuff and takes me to a happy place. :)

Not to try to outdo you, but my brother actually had BRAIN SURGERY unnecessarily. Turns out it was just a little scar tissue. Still, it did keep him from being rejected by every insurance company for not resolving the issue. And his only side effect was having to get glasses, because I guess when they remove your eyeballs to get them out of the way, they might not be exactly the same again.
