Also good for road rash

Before I had Miss Dub, I took a class on caring for newborns and while most of it was totally useless or common sense - "Be sure to change her diaper when it smells!" - there were two things that I still remember:

First, is that you should never wipe your baby when they only pee, do #1, make a yellow fountain or whatever you want to call it. Urine has no bacteria and when it's just going to air dry or be absorbed into a fresh diaper, all the wiping does is promote diaper rash.

Second, the number one cause of diaper rash is diaper rash ointment. Apparently, people are very zealous in applying things like diaper rash cream and baby powder (totally unnecessary, rash or not) even when their baby doesn't have a rash. And, in my experience, even when a baby has a rash, exposing it to air or leaving it alone helps more than the fanciest cream.

Or so I thought until we went to Utah and Miss Dub contracted a wicked diaper rash that may or may not have been a flesh-eating virus. (I'm not drawing any correlation between Utah and rashes, but ...) It clearly needed to be medicated, but Desitin did nothing. Then my genius sister-in-law introduced me to Resinol, a cream intended for burns. It was amazing! It has the color and consistency of silly putty, but it totally cleared up her rash in a few days.

Only bummer is it's hard to locate. Mr. Dub went to four stores to no avail before my brother-in-law located it elsewhere. Unfortunately, this will be earning Mr. Dub brownie points for several years, but it was worth it. And he's really racking them up these days, as you can imagine.

Now, I must go make some brownies.

Your last sentence made me laugh, because as soon as you said "brownie points", I immediately thought of how delicious brownies sound and began a mental inventory of my cupboard to determine if I have any brownie mix. Sadly, I'm at work, so they will have to wait.

gracie had a rash in utah too. i think because it was so dry. she was also sick a good amount of the time and got a lot of lactose (that she's allergic to) which i attributed the rash too. it didn't seem to bother her so i didn't do anything but it's good to know that when i go there, resinol exists. thanks!

Jamie's the expert on diaper rash in our family. But recently I discovered that for my little gal, Aquaphor really works for the major rashes. Butt Paste works in minor cases. And for chafing from swimsuits and ocean/sand for my boys, Bag Balm is the cure. I bet bag balm works on diaper rash too, but it kind of smells funky.
And you don't wipe for #1? That would definitely give any of my kids a rash, not to mention they kind of smell if they're not wiped. We wipe at every diaper change in this house and haven't been too rash-prone (just in times of diarrhea).

that's good to know. last time asher had a really bad rash, bleeding and everything, i used only petroleum jelly, and it worked wonders and didn't make him scream everytime i applied it!

I think different bums need different treatments. My little is very prone to diaper rash (I am talking bleeding bum on several occasions) and I have found that after one application of Desitin it is almost cleared up. But I try not to overdo it. I am glad to hear of another good solution because there is not much sadder than your child with a bleeding bum.

For my boys... I never wiped when they went just pee and they rarely had rashes... if ever- so I agree- but now that I have a girl- it is hard not to wipe her 'bum' when she just goes pee- because it smells more and I don't know- maybe I want her smelling pretty- but I have to admit- she has gotten more rashes- but i think the kind of wipees make a difference (for me huggies sensitive) I tried the costco kirkland brand and she got a rash right away-

Huh. I have never heard of not wiping for #1; I wiped thoroughly for all #1 diapers for all 4 of my kids and none of them ever had a problem with diaper rash. But I do agree about exposing it to the air.

Hope you're feeling okay!

I could probably count on one hand the number of times I had to use diaper rash cream on my two-year-old. I think some babies are just more prone to it than others - food sensitivities and daddy forgetting to change a diaper and whatnot. I'm with the smell police - I always use wipes, but only the unscented ones.

Other than "air-drying" - which I found pretty effective but not very practical - CORN STARCH is the way to go. Just sprinkle some on and really keeps the moisture away (if that's the problem). Another bonus: can be found anywhere!

I am SOOO glad that you mentioned not wiping for #1. My doctor told me that I didn't need to years ago when my 2nd daughter had serious rash issues as a baby. I skip wiping #1 all the time for my baby now. I mentioned it to Kate, my sis who commented above, one time and she acted like I was so gross. I agree that it does sound gross, but my doctor told me not to wipe pee! So I have kept it in the closet ever since.

So...it is nice to be out in the open. We skip wiping pee around here!! Yeah!

I'm so glad to finally get that off my chest! As far as what to put on diaper rash, my youngest two both had such issues that they ended up needing a prescription cream. It is like gold. But my back up is always Aquaphor.

I never thought you needed to wipe for just pee, and am glad to know the doctor agrees. I wonder how many of my other un-hygenic habits everyone would think are gross? We are not over-sanitizers in this household, and my children are rarely sick and have had very few diaper rashes. So there.

I've found the best trick for diaper rash is using a blow dryer (low, cool-to-warm air). It's a tip passed onto me by a former boss and it's worked magic.

But yea! Baby #2 is being potty trained now so hopefully, very soon, no more diapers and no more diaper rash.

I've only tried Desitin once, since Bria's been mostly diaper rash-free. But oh how she screamed when I applied it--probably because it requires direct, dragging contact with extra-sensitive areas AND it's thick and heavily perfumed. I'm SO not a DR ointment fan. However, I adore Ammen's Medicated Powder. My mom introduced me: it's a zinc oxide powder without the heavy scent, and it cools the area. Plus it's a powder for gently application. It's also great to put on when it's hot out because it absorbs extra moisture that can cause irritation.

If you're into ointments, though, I've heard good things about Bordeaux's Butt Paste (endorsed by Oprah). But has anyone tried it?

You can't imagine how seeing that picture of resinol made me laugh. We used it on everything growing up. It smells so bad though we called it "Stinkenol" Maybe they removed the smell nowadays. It's miracle stuff.

I wish that there were "blogs" in "my day" You girls know way more than I ever did.(although you know way more about EVERYTHING! I can remember my girls asking about some s e x questions when they were newly married.Turned out that they basically knew more about those things too!) Anyway, I'm going to try to find that stuff, maybe it would work on my 6 mo. old grandaughter's neck crease where the sun never shines and air never flows...... love ya!

TRIPLE PASTE...best stuff ever...apply liberally...works like a dream..its like 7 bucks a little pricey well worth it, in the diaper rash section, where i'm sure you've looked and never noticed, cause i was the same way, thanks to my genius sister...Target, need i say more?

So I'm way late in the game here and This font I'm typing looks completely wacko, I can't even read it. But alas... My hubbies grandma suggested This very stuff over Christmas break for My daughters eczema (which NOTHING has cured) and I have yet to see it cure that, however, I do agree that is really like Silly putty in texture and smells like it too...

Another FABULOUS thing for diaper rash

Dr. SMITH's. Comes in a little white jar with blue writing, most often found behind the pharmacy counter. Haven't found anything better
