Confession:
I loOoVe Mary Jane candies.
They were my Halloween treat of choice growing up, even though they seem like the candy most likely to be filled with razor blades.
I also had a hankering for the black and orange-wrapped taffies and vanilla-flavored Tootsie rolls, though I could never admit it to my peers for fear of being blacklisted from the cool lunch table. (Also kept in the closet: My affinity for egg salad sandwiches.)
And by the way, has any one ever found a razor blade in their H-Day candy? If so, was it a Mary Jane? If so, can I have the razor-free part? I'm hungry.
(I should explain, lest you think I lived a deprived childhood where I was given Bit-o-Honeys instead of Snickers, that I really HATED chocolate growing up. My mature taste buds, however, only dis-prefer it.)
What's your favorite Halloween candy?

Baked goods. Which were plentiful back in the dark ages when I trick-treated, but of course are a major taboo now.
However ... I will say that the ban on baked goods took mucho pressure off the young mother who was having enough trouble coming up with 4 costumes.
probably the chocolate stuff, like reeses peanut butter cups and dark chocolate milky ways (not when i was younger, but now...). I am also a sucker for fruity candy such as starbursts, and i love the fruity tootsie rolls!
for some reason when i reach my hand into a bag full of halloween candy, all i want is a three musketeers. a candy i would never buy otherwise. my sister in law says that a trick or treat bag full of candy gives off the perfect aroma for an antidepressant. maybe i should market that?
I'd always go for the chocolate! Snickers, Milky Way, Reeces, Twix, etc. but I loved the non chocolate stuff too! Starburst, Skittles, Jolly Ranchers, those black/orange rappered things... but I'd only eat those after I ate the better candy :P candy in general is tasty! i'll eat almost all of it :P I did just buy some Halloween Peeps! Since when did they start making those?!?!? mmmm tasty! Never had a razor blade though so that's good :)
sadly, if it is free and it is candy, i'll eat it. it doesn't really matter what it is.
little baby snickers bars, maybe popped in the fridge for a bit.
mrs dub, do you really care about this kind of stuff (all the stuff you ask your readers), do you just like comments, or do you just like to get a dialog going? i've always wondered. :)
Snickers sweet sinful Snickers oh, how I love you so..... and Kit Kat delicate and beautiful Kit Kat....... but wait, I can't forget the lovely and talented peanut m&m's erobed in a cruchy candy shell.......Mmmmmmmmm Caaaaannnndddyyy.....IIII Looove Youuuu .....
i'm not a fan of the taffies or the maryjanes, but i still love you b/c we could totally share a bag of hcandy... i LOVE chocolate and anything sweet and fruity. yes, i really love the fruity tootsie rolls (nm&a and i are kindred spirits)!
I like mounds which worked out well as a child. Not many kids like dark chocolate and coconut! I got most of the mounds from my brothers and sisters. I too like all kinds of food, probably explains my weight issues. I'm not too picky when it come to food or treats! No razors in my candy buy some crazy man wanted my friend and I to go to his garage with him....luckily her dad came up behind us within a few seconds of the request. We were little and knew we shouldn't go but didn't quite know what to do. Good thing for dads who decide on a last minute whim to go trick or treating with their little girls!
CHOCOLATE ALL THE WAY!!! (BUT THAT IS ANY TIME OF YEAR)
I go along with Stephanie, Alas I am like Chucky "He'll eat anything!"
I'm just a Fabulous Gal stuck in a Trailor Trash Body, But hey, what's wrong with Fabulously Trashy? Which explains my whole life experience delima, that grey area in between.....
(I'm not saying Stephanie is trashy, I don't even know whe she is, but I am sure she is fabulous!)
Wait, I'm overcoming my dismay (and nausea) at your candies of choice...and egg salad sandwiches.
Okay, I think I'm better.
All things chocolate for me. Last year I especially enjoyed the leftover-from-Christmas Mint Kit Kats that someone gave us. A bit stale, but YUM!
we have found no razor blades, and i sheepishly admit i'm not always as thorough at checking my children's candy as i should be...the fear of losing a digit or limb keeps me at a distance.
HALLOWEEN OREOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved those little boxes of nerds or sweetarts.
for the record, i really do care about the answer to the questions i ask. either i'm very insecure and need to know what the crowd consensus is, or i'm just an infomaniac with a burning need to know ALL things. i'm leaning towards the latter.
I love the peanut butter toffees too. I'd always trade my suckers for my siblings' since they weren't in high demand. I hadn't ever heard of Mary Janes until last week when I snagged one out of a pinata. Good stuff!
I dis-prefer chocolate as well. I like candy bars, but the chocolate is usually just a vessel for the good stuff.
i don't have a fave halloween candy, but i love chocolate any time of year. and if it's free (and razor free) then i feel as if i've won the lottery.
i do like those peanut buttery ones in the black and orange wrappers too. but i'm really trying not to buy halloween candy until the last possible minute because i have been known to eat the whole bag.
last week i got candy corn and mallow pumpkins to put in some glass pumpkins as a decoration. bad idea because they are all gone. and i don't really like candy corn. they aren't worth the calories to me.
i just can't be trusted.
I always wanted black licorice, my favorite candy, for trick or treat. But no one every gave it out, and most other children were very happy about that. I too, like chewy/fruity candy more than chocolate, though I have developed a late in life appreciation for dark chocolate. I used to save most of my Halloween haul for a few days, then take it to school and sell it at substantial markup to my classmates who were crashing from their sugar high after consuming their own stash. Then I'd go buy what I eally wanted (penny licorice, Nibs, Black Crows, Snaps, etc.) instead of the Smarties, Necco Wafers, and Butterfingers I had received. Only a million or so laws and school policies would preclude that today. By the way, though they are apparently from my era, I never heard of Mary Jane candy until this post.
Perhaps you were embarrassed to be seen eating Mary Janes - but how about being the child of a mother who hands out NICKELS (what, exactly, can you buy with a Nickel - even in the 80s!!!) or pencils? Horrifying!
I feel pretty out of it that I don't know what Mary Jane's are. I think I really liked getting Nerds when I was younger; and I really liked that my Grandma would hand out full-size candy bars. Nowadays, I try to steal my kids' chocolate and leave the fruity stuff for them. They prefer the fruity stuff anyway so what's the harm?
I love Mr. Goodbars. And snickers.
MARY JANE AND ANNIE!
Anything chocolate was quickly hoarded. I didn't like nuts growing up so my parents delighted in my gifts of snickers and baby ruths.
I grew up amidst a lot of Asian families which made trick-or-treating pretty tricky. Either they bought the good candy (i.e. chocolate)or they went the other way and gave out Asian candies. Those were usually semi-fruity hard candies that were just blech. The Asian market just doesn't have the high tolerance for sugar as the American and so eating those treats were like sucking on watered down juice. Those candies were promptly thrown out.
The best thing about Halloween now is that I get to steal away all my three-year-olds candy. He can't possibly eat all of it but I sure can!
oh man... these comments are making my fillings throb.
just thinking about the sheer volume of candy consumed in one day makes me ill... so, i'm usually still munching candy from the previous halloween when the next oct. 31 rolls around. but if i HAVE to choose... i'm usually one to dig through the candy to find the "crunch" bar. not something i'd ever buy off the shelf... but it's a treat in the halloween bag for some odd reason. oh... and the mini "rolos" -- heaven. and i have made myself completely sick by eating handfuls of candy corn and butterfinger bb's... trust me, you can't stop once you start.
do you remember when it was still kosher (but totally uncool, of course) to hand out apples on halloween? some people just don't get the point, do they? :)
Oh, I couldn't possibly choose just one kind of candy. Anything but black licorice and coconut-filled chocolate (almond joy=ick).
M&M's plain.... I could eat them all day..(Oh- I did yesterday...bad mommy!)
Reese's. I love egg salad sandwiches too. My dh makes it awesome for me.
Skittles and snickers pretty much rule! Then again anything coming from an orange, plastic pumpkin or an old pillowcase tasted good to me. I lived to come home, pile it up in one giant mass and eat until I puked. Then my dentist father would gather up the leftovers and donate them to the local charity while we were sent off to floss, brush and rinse -- never to taste candy again until the next year.
my, my how great minds think alike today. i had no idea what you were posting on candy today ...AND SO DID I! (well, sort of. there is a lot of rambling in there too! A LOT!)
kindred spirits.
I don't feel that candy corn is adequately represented, and this makes no sense to me.
Doesn't everyone love candy corn?
Or do I just love candy corn enough for everyone?
I've been considering a blog post devoted entirely to candy corn for like two whole days.
My husband loathes candy corn. I think it's a love/hate candy.
For me, my hcandy guilty pleasure was Double Bubble gum. Even though you have to replace it every 2 minutes (which I happily do) because it loses the flavor so quickly.
anything chocolate.
BUT CAN WE PLEASE GET RID of that terribly bland, cheap-o mix of tootsie rolls?!
Tootsie rolls should only be used to treat low blood sugars in case of dire hypoglycemic emergency. serously.
I have never heard of Mary Janes. I love me some Bit-o-honey... so if it's anything like that, I'm all over it. I must now search the stores. I'm pretty sad that I've been deprived of MJs for thirty years...
I do love candy corn. I'm not a big candy eater though. I prefer the chocolates over the fruits.
i'll be giving out egg salad sandwiches this year.
My favorites are Nerds. Yes, you are what you eat. I also love anything with Peanut Butter.
favorite: HEATH or SKOR.
honorable mention: Twix, Butterfinger, Almond Joy
hate: CANDY CORN.
also hate: whoppers.
A woman after my own heart, those are my absolute top faves - especially Mary Janes. Funnily enough, I have a hard time eating them at any time other than Halloween, talk about conditioning.
