Tree trouble

Three questions:

#1: Is it worth buying a real Christmas tree if it doesn't smell?

#2: Do any Christmas trees smell anymore, 'cause our last few really haven't.

#3: How can I make my stupid Christmas tree smell stronger?

our christmas tree lot person said to put in 2-3 regualr aspirin and a can of sprite. it seems to work.

my mom has fake trees (lots of them) and she uses this great little spray in the house that smells like a real tree. your nose would never know. maybe try one of those.

what?! scentless trees?! what is that?! the whole point of killing nature is to bring that delicious and real pine scent into your home!

i'd buy fake if real ones don't smell...

that's depressing... just depressing.

i've noticed that the seeming scentiness of the tree is relative to the size of your house, number one. the only time i can really smell ours is when i first walk in the door. after that, it just becomes an ambient kind of piney smell.
but other people smell it right away . . .

number two, i'm going to try mrs. r's trick. thanks mrs. r!

I have a fake tree because they get so dry here in the desert. But my friend gave me a great suggestion because I love the smell of Christmas trees. I went down and got some scraps at a tree lot and cut it up then boil it in a little water and then let it simmer all day (or put in a crockpot) and it fills your house with the scent.

our tree doesn't smell, either! i am totally bummed. a girl in my ward just told me to get some pine scented car freshener tree things and stick them in my tree. i am seriously considering it. because what good is a real tree if there is no piney smell?

Interesting recent articles about the mold that develops very quickly in natural trees. With Miss Dub's possible respiratory allergies, might be a good reason to go fake. Mrs. R's tricks help the tree absorb water and not dry out or lose needles so fast, but I'm not sure they will increase the pine smell. Crush the needles in your hand at the lot and smell; if it doesn't smell there it won't at home. Different varieties have different levels of smell. Unfortunately, the best smelling may be the most sticky because there seems to be a pitch/smell relationship. Loved fresh ones when I was younger; don't miss the trip to the lot, transporting, erecting, and disposing of the fresh ones now that I am older. Of course, you won't rope yourself out of the car and have to crawl through the window or get stuck with the tree in the back of the car, or saw off too much or too little or spawn similar stories with a fake.

Our tree smells good but our house floorplan is too open to really notice it. At our old (smaller) house the smell would knock you over every time you walked in the door. It was awesome. Now we get the same kind of trees as we always have, but with our downstairs being all open (there are literally no doors or doorways) the smell gets lost & it's a little sad. But it still smells nice if you get close to it.

All I can think of is just try to get as fresh a tree as you can. Ask them how recently their shipment came in or when the next is coming in... obviously if they're fresher they'll last longer; & I'm really hoping for a still-green tree when we get back from Utah on the 26th.

i just opted for the body shop fragrance oils and a fake. not the same as the real deal but sure sounds like you have to fake the smell regardless.

wow, we are grown ups.

We have wax potpourri from Yankee Candle and it actually works better than any air freshener we've tried. Like a candle, but not. Great question, learned a lot of good tips!

Who cares about the tree? How can I get myself one of those cute little elves like you have there.

And actually, your tree is gorgeous.

I bought this spray bottle of tree fragrance at Paddock Pools for $10 (a splurge) and it is WONDERFUL! You just spray a few squirts on your fake or real tree and it lasts for a couple days. I am so happy that I found it as smelly the tree is the #1 reason for a real tree, and my last few real trees didn't have any fragrence either.

I was surprised that the scent was your tree trouble and not Miss Dub loving the tree and wanting to hug and hold and eat its contents all the time like my daughter and nephew. I finally had to lock the tree in the kitchen away from them because they pulled it over on themselves. (It's only a four-footer.)

I am with you ...the trees never smell like they should.

I buy real wreaths from Costco...we travel most of Christmas so a real tree is just a mess.

At least you have a tree.

I need to get a-shopping and decorating.

We got a fake tree last year... and I love it! The year before- I was so mad- because our tree didn't smell and I felt like that was the only reason to get a real one. I highly recommend a fake one...it has saved me hours of putting on the lights and lots of swearing...

Buy the "winter" scent candle at Bath and Body Works. It smells like Christmas (I can't think of another way to explain it) and tricks people into thinking our fake tree smells real.

Glade has an evergreen plug in that works wonders!

I used to be an adamant real-tree lover just for that very reason, but a few years ago we bought a fake tree that is pre-lit. Best purchase we ever made, as is the Christmas scented candle. I'm totally converted, and I would never go back. Easier, less mess, and after 2 kiddos both of those words are like heaven to me.

I like your star...take some of the needles off and then vacum them.
