What are your favorite flicks?
(Mostly because I need something good to watch during this writer's strike, which I understand but nonetheless lament as all our shows go on hiatus indefinitely.)
p.s. I don't watch R-rated flicks unless they're edited so hook me up with some PG-13ers, please!
p.p.s. I seriously contemplated adding Overboard to this list.

hey, there's nothing wrong with overboard. it is a classic.
80s -- Say Anything, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink
oldies -- Funny Face (on DVD now!), Guess Who's Coming To Dinner?
British (?) -- Waking Ned Devine, On A Clear Day
romance -- Circle of Friends, Return to Me
That was way more random than your list, and also contained nothing current, but they're all worth seeing, if anyone hasn't.
well, first off... i must put in a plug for clearplay. pretty much the greatest invention of our generation (probably not). that being said, some of my favorite movies below are rated "r" because you're going to go buy a clearplay DVD player from target for $45, with a coupon for a $45 one-year membership.
- the lives of others (edited)
- joe vs. the volcano
- bandits
- the godfather, part 1 and 2 (must be seen sometime during your existence... with a clearplay)
- 50 first dates (edited)
- dead man walking (edited)
- the wedding singer
- so i married an axe murderer
- elf (it's that time of year again!)
- finding neverland
- good will hunting (edited)
- home alone
- the prestige
- the princess and the warrior (german movie - edited)
ok... i'll stop.
Where is Napoleon Dynamite? Since- you are his girlfriend.
Everyone in my family loves Overboard. We own it on VHS and DVD. My husband doesn't understand the fascination.
What about
-Sense and Sensibility
-Pride and Prejudice (the really long version with Colin Firth)
-Big Fish
-Waking Ned Devine
-Ferris Bueller's Day Off
-Sabrina (one with Harrison Ford)
-Hotel Rwanada (everyone should probably see this movie once)
-Legally Blonde (a classic in my mind)
-Crash (definitely edited)
-Anne of Green Gables (a throwback to childhood and my crush on Gilbert)
janaya, i also love bandits. hysterical. "beavers and ducks!"
i was thinking about this yesterday in the shower, only i asked myself, "what is the greatest movie of all time?"
the scene in "sleepless in seattle" where the boys are bawling over "platoon" and the girls are crying over "an affair to remember" kept running through my mind. they too were discussing the greatest movie of all time.
yesterday i watched "elizabethtown" while i was cleaning the kitchen and i was pleasantly surprised. it's quirky and funny. not my favorite, but something you could check out and enjoy.
we are really into race movies at our house too (especially ones that are based on a true stories or true events). we watched "pride" on the way down to vegas last weekend and loved it.
tear jerker.
I watch Overboard pretty much any time I come across it on tv.
I really like Emma, with Gwynneth Paltrow. I watch it while I do laundry every week, because I've been doing that for five years, and it's a habit. The dialogue is fabulous.
I also like:
The Importance of Being Ernest with Colin Firth,
The Count of Monte Cristo,
Galaxy Quest,
and North & South (BBC miniseries like Pride & Prejudice--more drama, intense romance)
And my mom has watched Phantom of the Opera a million times. I love Minnie Driver in that.
Drop Dead Gorgeous. Rent and watch NOW.
As Good as it Gets with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt...hands down my favorite comedy.
Are you kidding me? You know about Stealing Home and it's one of your favorites? I wanted to marry William McNamara when I was in high school. And I own (and still listen to) the soundtrack.
I also love She's Having a Baby.
And my favorite to watch with my kids is Peter Pan (2003).
Kurt Russel is dreamy!
any sappy romantic comedy with hugh grant (about a boy, music and lyrics, love actually, notting hill...), monsters, inc., napolean dynamite, garden state... so many more.
That Thing You Do, and anything with Bill Murray.
I also love Raising Arizona.
I just watched Overboard last week and I cried at the end. (Again!) Great show.
Some of my favorites:
Cinema Paradiso (Italian)
Legend (one of Tom Cruise's earliest, a fantasy ala Labyrinth)
Ponette (French)
Amelie (French)
Benny & Joon
Edward Scissorhands
Hackers
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Emporer's New Groove
Romeo + Juliet (the DiCaprio/Danes version)
The Phantom of the Opera
~ hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
~ a cinderella story
~ the perfect man (sorry i LOVE hilary duff!)
~ the princess bride
~ monty python and the holy grail (classic!)
~ the italian job
~ coyote ugly
~ what about bob - most annoying funny movie ever lol
i think that's all i can think of at the moment... i might come up w/ more later :) enjoy!
oh what fun!
- Jane Eyre (2006 BBC version)
- What's Up Doc?
- An Ideal Husband
- Amelie (edited)
- Charade
- Cold Mountain (edited)
- French Kiss
- Much Ado About Nothing
- Moulin Rouge
- My Fair Lady
- Phantom (2004)
- Ocean's 11
- Pride & Prejudice (2005)
- Sense & Sensibility
- Sound Of Music
...just to name a few
Oh the wedding singer is a must! But my #1 fav of all times is - The Game.
whatever happened to back to the beach?
Stranger than Ficton.
I am worried about the writer's strike too. As of next week, where will all my shows go?
Oh dear. I could go on forever...
*Hunt for Red October
*The Fugitive
*Rudy
*My Big Fat Greek Wedding
*Any of the Harry Potter's
*Sweet Home Alabama
*Remember the Titans
*Apollo 13
*Father of the bride one and two...
*The man who knew to little
*Waking Ned Divine
*Return to me
So much fun. So little time. Have fun.
HILARI!!! back to the beach!?!?! i love that you know that movie! NO ONE knows that movie when i bring it up!! (maybe because i'm still in provo, and everyone left here besides me wasn't even born when that movie came out). oh man, i have to tell this story... my dad was a movie theatre manager until i was 9 years old, and one week during the summer my mom left to go to some convention in utah and my brother went to some friends house, and so i went to the movie theatres with my dad everyday while he worked. those were the days when kids had freedom, and so i would wander the mall by myself and stuff... but most of the time, i just watched movies. and back to the beach was playing... i watched that movie three times a day for 5 days straight. i LOVE that movie. for no apparent reason other than i've watched it 15 times in one week on the big screen.
my heart is full.
I now know why we can't be friends, I have only seen two of the movies on your list- I knew I wasn't cool enough for you :) Ok, my personal favorite is The Emperor's Club- a little cliche but a good moral.
Waiting for Guffman
Rushmore
West Side Story
She's Having A Baby
Fool's Rush In
Chariots of Fire
Love Actually
Dear Frankie, The Waitress
janaya - back to the beach is our family favorite we watch it every time we are gettin ready to go to the beach-i already adored pee wee herman but his cameo in the epic film cemented my devotion to him.Hilari (Mrs Jay) and I and our 3 other sistahs love that movie and Im tryin to teach my children about the finer things in life by exposing them to it and Ghostbusters.
'big business' and '9 to 5'. lilly tomlin cracks when she was at her peak.
Oh my goodness, Melmck, you know Big Business?!! My FAVORITE!! Like, it's the only thing that'd keep me awake nursing for the first 3 months. Other faves (and they are quite juvenile) include The Count of Monte Cristo, Pride & Prejudice (2005), Muppets Christmas Carol, Emperor's New Groove, and Far And Away. I don't think Tom Cruise is attractive EXCEPT for that movie. I have to watch it at least every 12 months, usually when I'm sick or ironing.
You have to watch A Room with a View...so fun! It does have some nudity but it is not nudity in a sexual way. It is funny. My dad who was a stk. Pres. and works in the temple even likes it! I highly recomend it!
Overboard is my all time favorite. When people ask me what my favorite movie is "Overboard" is how I respond!
--Bridget Jone's Diary--I've only seen the edited version.
--My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
--Better Off Dead.
--Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Also..it's not a movie, but have you seen the Gilmore Girls? Girly and Fun. I'm plan on catching up during the strike.
OH MY GOSH OH MY GOSH!
A comment section that talks about Stealing Home AND Back to the Beach???
I listened to my soundtrack of Stealing Home until it broke. I STILL have a crush on William McNamara and I don't think he's ever been in anything else (except this TV movie called Maple Drive where Jim Carrey first tried to play serious roles, wow, i'm embarrasing myself here). As for Back to the Beach-we rented it so many times growing up that the guy at the video store finally just gave it to us. Not a family outing goes by that someone doesn't quote that movie. "you want me to conjugate that for you dad? you know what conjugate MEANS pop?"
wow wow wow. you ladies are a smart bunch!!!
