It's Turkey week! Never mind that I don't care for turkey, or that I personally would prefer to have a Mexican fiesta in lieu of the traditional T-day fare - what's great about Thanksgiving this year is that, unlike the last two years, we'll actually be spending it with family -- in Rhode Island. More specifically, Mr. Dub's bro and his wife.
I mean, who goes to Rhode Island? Sure, it gets a disproportionate amount of elementary school students who want to do their state report on it because they assume its small size will require a smaller effort. (Alas, no, you'll just have to ramble on longer about their top export: scrap and waste.) But most people never make it to the tiny state with the longest name: Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. You know, besides the million people who live there.
Perhaps this would be a good time to let you know that I may or may not be blogging whilst binging (and contemplating purging, but only to make room for more mashed taters). In fact, the life stress demons have decided that it's possible I will return from RI (we're on an abbreviated basis - jealous?) and only have a few days to pack up our place and move up the road to a nicer residence. The nicer residence would be good, the packing no me likey. Throw in a church activity I'm in charge of the same week, and you could bet on the hangnails I'll be sporting come December.
So I may or may not blog after today. I may or may not blog next week. And I may or may not live to tell my tales of Rhode Island and its beautiful piles of scrap and waste.
Now, what's your favorite Turkey day dish?
I can't get enough rolls myself.
(And do not say dressing! I prefer the term, "stuffing.")

oooh, i'm with ya, sister. i dislike the word "dressing," but i use it anyway b/c your bro doesn't actually stuff the turkey, so i don't feel that it should be called stuffing... even though it is equally delicious, especially this year.
my faves: stuffing, green bean casserole and rolls. yummy!
since we celebrated early, we had leftovers for din last night and will indulge in turkey sammies for lunch.
it's all about the mashed taters and green bean caserole for me!! yum! i can't wait!!! :D
I used to be a strictly mashed potatoes and rolls gal...but my taste buds are expanding. Oh, I pretty much love it all (except cranberries, I just can't get into those). But I will stick true to my dessert loving self and say homemade banana cream pie is the best!
I have always hated turkey. When I became a vegetarian 15 years ago I started a new tradition. Everyone around me enjoys their turkey while I enjoy a burrito.
oh you see, mrs dub, stuffing and dressing are two totally different things! in my husband's southern family, there never was a dish called stuffing, hence, my husband can't stand the sage-y stove top type stuff and i have since been converted to the most delicious cornbread DRESSING recipe ever. maybe i'll post it . . . it's definitely not what i was used to, but it's delish nonetheless.
oh, and i'm all about a pumpkiny dessert. that's my favorite.
A heaping pile of stuffing, adjacent to mashed potatoes, all smothered in gravy. With a few peas near by. I can do without a lot of turkey meat but you need to cook a turkey to make the good gravy! I make homemade rolls so often, there's nothing special to me about them on T-day. Oh yeah, and pie. Any kind. With whipped cream. Not cool whip.
Have a fun trip! Miss Dub will be so excited when she's old enough to think it's cool to have visited several exotic states (ie RI). We're going to St. George for Christmas and will take a brief jaunt through NV on the way, which my kids have never been to, but they're so excited to add NV to their states list!
Although they have the same raw ingredients, stuffing is stuffed into the turkey; dressing is made and served on the side.
Always save room for: MORE DRESSING AND STUFFING. Also, my dad's fabulous pumpkin and apple pies.
You just need to make two phone calls: one to the Elders' Quorum to pack up and move your stuff and one to the Relief Society to bring refreshments. Isn't that the sole purpose of those two organizations??
mashed potatos and gravy and lemon meringue pie. I know this will sound strange but I actually get more excited about cooking the meal than eating it.
how could i have forgotten CRANBERRIES?!?! yummy! too bad they don't exist in spain...
Can I just say thank you for not referring to stuffing as "dressing"- whenever my mother calls it that I feel as though I am putting ranch or thousand island on my plate. So why is it that I have to learn that you are leaving our cosy little Deerfield Rd for bigger and better on your blog? I am saddened that I will no longer be able to stroll Lincoln over to your house, this winter is going to be miserable! By the way, since I am a total snoop I hopped on over to Mr. Dub's brother's blog and may I just say that I have never seen two brothers who look less alike- did they have the same mother? (if they didn't I am now officially feeling bad :) Alright, this comment is as long as some of my rambling phone messages so call me later to fill me in on the details of the new house (just try to ignore the sobbing you will hear)
geez... and PUNKIN' PIE... APPLE PIE (a la mode), too!
P.S- My mother brought over the 10pg packet of information for the christmas party (it may have even been longer) and can I just say OUT OF CONTROL!! All I wanted at the christmas party was cheesy potatoes, ham, and Santa Claus, needless to say, we are getting none of those. No, instead we will all be dressed as biblical characters while eating hummus and dried fruit. What I wouldn't give for a little BYU catered event!
I love every single part of Thanksgiving Dinner -- making it and eating it. It's a little hard for me to make assignments (we're hosting the family) because I'm worried someone will mess up something that I love. Love making homemade pies and rolls. And turkey. And everything.
My favorites: Pumpkin pie, Fazer pie...what is this you ask...a slice of heaven me thinks, and last but not least Turkey! High five for dark meat turkey...I'll take it over most anything else...besides dessert. Rolls are good but I make them enough throughout the year that they aren't that special to binge on them for one day. Enjoy Thanksgiving on the east coast...I'm pretty close by RI!
I think Steph is hogging too many answers!
For me it's all about the gravy and the things that exist (dressing, potatoes, turkey) for the sole purpose of holding the gravy up.)
And whatever dessert is offered. Without gravy.
For me it's the things you don't get often the rest of the year...turkey (as opposed to sundry turkey products), dressing (sorry daughter), cranberries, yams or sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. I like all the rest too, but those are the things that make it Thanksgiving...oh, and football.
I know the Virginia one came a couple years earlier than the Plymouth one, and Plymouth is the other side of the pennisula, and the Bay Colony folks and Roger Williams didn't get along, but really, you can't get much more Thanksgiving and pilgrimy than Rhode Island. Hope you have a great time.
gravy. gravy. and then more gravy.
Mashed potatoes and gravy. On my first Thanksgiving with my husband's family I was devastated to find that they had THREE kinds of "dressings" (I prefer the term stuffing as well) but NO mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm still getting over it....
For me, it is the fresh cranberry sauce. And I am the weird one who smothers everything in cranberries....the turkey, the potatoes, the stuffing. I cover it all. Do not give me gravy because I don't like it. Just the cranberries, please.
And, is it wrong that I HATE pumpkin pie?!
I am a carbaholic, so my faves are stuffing and rolls - yum! Mrs. Dub, I'm excited to hear about your potential new residence!!
Have fun in Rhode Island, take pictures, I've never been there!love, love, love ya!
Yes Ashby, hating pumpkin pie is WRONG!! Not necessarily wierd or unsual, but definitely wrong. And as Glamma Fab said on another blog, pumpkin pie is the best day after Thanksgiving breakfast.
Ashby, yes, it's wrong. Are you a communist? Just asking.
My mom told me I was in charge of the dressing this year. Me: "The wha...?? ...Like Ranch?" But since I was in charge, I called it Stuffing. And I called it Stove Top.
