I went to my first rummage sale yesterday. It wasn't as good as I expected it to be. As promised, it was enormous, and there were tons of people who seemed to enjoy the rummaging. But despite the rumors I'd heard, there wasn't an amazing amount of really nice stuff to be found. Instead, there were a lot of shoulder pads.
And when you tell me something is going to be good, I start to daydream a future that is so unbelievable - "Look at this brand-new Gucci jacket for ONE dollar!" - that I actually feel like it already happened to me. And when it doesn't, I feel deceived.
So despite the few good toys I found for my Miss, I got home in a tired, disappointed mood, though all the kind comments and stories from yesterday cheered me up quite a bit. (And frankly made me embarrassed. You do all know I'm just regular, right?)
Then, Mr. Dub had to work late. And since we're a one-car family until the end of the month, I had to wait by the phone to find out when he needed to be picked up and whether or not that would be followed by dinner at our friends' house. (The answer, ultimately, was no, for which I offer my continued apologies to the hostess.)
When we finally got the call to pick him up, I hurriedly put together a "maintenance bag" for Miss Dub as her cranky hour coincides with sunset. We then set off in the car, bad moods respectively intact.
As we sat at a stop light, our stereo began to play Feist's "1, 2, 3, 4." Call it overplayed if you will, but its catchy sound is still honey to my ears, and I found myself happily singing along. Suddenly, I noticed a tapping sound from behind me. I looked back to find Miss Dub dancing in her car seat and flinging her favorite bunny back and forth to the beat. This made me even happier so I started to sing louder and clap wildly to encourage her moves.
Suddenly, I noticed the woman next to me was staring. I tried to look away, but before I could, I realized she was smiling. And not just any smile but the kind of smile that said, "That just made my day."
And I thought, "That's it? That's all it takes to change your mood? A mother and baby dancing to a silly song?"
But like a teenager girl pursuing her crush, I couldn't be stopped. I kept singing, and Miss Dub kept dancing. As we streamed passed the stalled traffic going the other direction, I started to really rock out. I began pointing, smiling, waving and honking my horn. I encouraged Miss Dub to pump her fists. Not everyone noticed, but those who did instantly smiled. Some waved back. Others honked. And I could tell we were making their day, even if it was just because we looked ridiculous and would make a great story to share over the dinner table.
Finally, the song came to a close. We rounded a corner where a bright orange sun was setting against a pale purple sky. I giggled. Miss Dub squealed.
And you know what? It made my day.
... Until some lady hit our car and fled the scene while we were out to dinner. But we pulled a CSI and managed to piece together who done it. And it still didn't ruin my mood.

And that post just made my day! Thanks for the smile!
ok so as i'm imagining you and miss dub singin' and dancin' to a song, "1,2,3,4", that doesn't even sound familiar... i find myself boppin' right along with you guys lol. and yes, that totally made my day... and it just started! woohoo! thanks mrs. dub!
You made my day (as much as it was before 8 am) until the car-hitting part.
I will be needing details.
That l'il gal has always made my day.
But I will be needing video.
When did Miss Dub get all that hair?? As the mother of bald-until-2 babies, I am jealous. It is definitely enough for teeny barrettes! She's so cute!
It's the best when the babies start groovin' to the sound. Aww yeah! We're all rock stars now!
The willingness to do impetuous things without concern for the judgment of others with the result of making many happy has always been one of the best aspects of your personality. Glad it's being passed on (inherently and by nuturing) to Miss Dub.
I, too, wish we had film at 11 (10 Central Time) of this incident (and also the parking lot hit and run).
I love when you can loose yourself in the innocence of a child and just let loose! I found myself dancing with my little guy last night too and it just does something to your insides to see them so happy and uninhibited. So sorry to hear about your car! But nice CSI work though, detective, musician, performer, writer, clam dip critic, is there anything that you cant do? ;)
love it. this mos def reminds me of my sis and i. and yes, it made my day too.
You seem like the coolest mom. Can't wait to meet your little one. Come by some time and visit the ol' newsroom.
i love doing that with gracie. from the time she was very little, the only thing that has stopped her from yelling or screaming is if i turn up the music really loud.
she loves jazzin back and forth to the beat and i put my hand in her lap for her to high five when she gets real excited.
it makes me laugh and sometimes she finds an old pair of mine or rob's aviators and puts them on her face, scrunching her cheecks to hold them up, and bobbin her head.
i'm happy to see that lil miss can be just as entertained by music. gracie has always been a fan of anything with a beat.
I love those moments! we have a tradition of dancin' and singin' in the rain (a la Gene Kelley)last night i got to practice my roger rabbit and cabbage patch ( i dont want to brag but ive got a mean robot dance) and it is always fun! im glad you are teachin lil' miss dub to let loose and cut a rug cuz we need her to carry on our tradition of freakin inanimate objects at church dances!
Love this post. I am kind of having one of those days... and I think a little "1,2,3,4" and dancing with my kiddos would do wonders...
And I know this is inappropriate... (sorry Mrs. Dub) but can I use this as a place to say hi to gfunk? Hi! I haven't seen you for a few years (I remember once seeing you and your mom and a couple of kids at Fashion Square)... and I think now that I live in the AZ, I should come to visit you and we should introduce our children. And you need a blog because the occasional picture of your kids on Hilari's blog just isn't enough. Man, I just outed myself... yes, I read Hilari's blog. Hi Hilari. :)
What you'll really love is when your kids start singing along to rap songs that come on the radio, as mine have recently to Kanye's new "stronger" single. Then you realize that they pick up things a little too quickly and you're grateful for radio edits.
It's fun to introduce kids to good music. I'm glad to hear you're both still dancing. And brightening the world whereever you go.
muah!
You are a little crazy, and I like that!
so do you think it would have the same affect on people if they were to look over and see burton and i dancing in our car to "1 2 3 4"? because that was us yesterday... and frankly, i think it might just make people roll their eyes. :) i'm looking forward to having a baby as a good excuse for being silly.
you're cute. and this made me smile.
I'm sorry for the hit and run! And that the rummage sale put you in a not-so-great mood... but I love Feist! Last summer I listened to her last album on my mp3 player as I swam laps - it made exercising almost relaxing and therapeutic...
Talk about living in the moment! Dont you just feel so alive when that inner child comes out and suddenly all of the responsible and logical things in life seem unimportant.
Wish I could have seen that!
What a great post.
There is something about music that ALWAYS makes me happy...It can change my mood instantly..Great post!
bleh!!
this story made my day!
haa, so cute.
and that picture of the dublet is adorable!
i'm the same way, totally small and crazy average things turn my frown into a smile.
love it.
:]
I've never heard that song before! I liked it, although the video was... well, okay, it was cool! We love to dance in the car, too. Sorry about the hit-and-run, hope you got it covered!
Ditto: That made my day too.
