Swan Song for Summer

Dear Summer
,

I just wanted to say a formal farewell to you as you disappeared Tuesday night without even whispering, "Adieu." As someone who hates goodbyes, I understand your hasty departure, but after our intimate relationship this summer I really expected more - a final barbecue, a last swim, one more hot night looking at the stars. But instead I went to bed humid and woke up with a chill to realize that the leaves were already changing, the air was suddenly crisp and the world had been repainted in hues of autumn where vivid greens had just been.

Crying would seem natural but surprisingly I'm not sad. With the same anticipation that I brought out my sandals on the first bearably warm day in April I put on my ballet flats yesterday. I realized that I'm actually sick of skirts and shorts and longing to cover my finally tan legs in pants. I'm excited to replace my "melon" and "freesia" home fragrance oils with scents like "pumpkin nectarine" and "golden apple." I want to make soups not salads. And I almost want to decorate for fall, though I refuse to do anything Halloween-specific. I just hate the black-orange color combo. And while I'm happy to see purple and green have been added to the mix, I'd much prefer taupe and turquoise.

So I suppose it was time to say goodbye, Summer. I guess our love affair had begun to wane. Hot was no longer invigorating. Bright was no longer charming. Wet just started to feel clammy. Things got stale.

But that doesn't mean we're over. Shortly after Christmas, if not sooner, I'll be begging for you to come back. I'll wet my pillow with tears at night remembering all our good times from this year and years past. I'll dream of you. I'll wish for you. I'll change my tune.

You are my season, Summer. Never forget that. But I'm not ready to settle down. I need a little Fall and Spring in my life to keep things exciting, but I love you the most. Always have, always will.

Oh, and I hate Winter. Like, I give myself diarrhea thinking about how soon that pointless season will steal Fall away. Any chance you could tell him to back off? He's so pushy.

Until next year!
Mrs. Dub

Yes, we've marked the passing here, too, as it seems we may have had our last 100 and won't see anything over 99 in October or 90 in November.

In a few years, Ms. Dub will be in school and the Fall will surpass the New Year as a time of new beginnings, even though naturally is a time of harvest and things beginning to die or hibernate. Then it will bring even more excitement than pumpkins, bright leaves, sweaters, and apple cider.

I also have always hated Winter, even when it only meant the rainy season growing up in Southern California. But I also always thought Winter was female. But maybe that had more to do with my success with girls in those SoCal days than the true gender of the seasons.

I will miss summer- but fall is the best (in my opinion) The first days of winter are nice- and then I feel the same as you do.

i don't know what you're talking about! it was straight hot today (before the super cool breeze came)! plus - it was the most perfect beach day that i've seen yet!

Loved this! I'm a summer girl, too. Fall is pretty good, but I have to admit I am not too excited about fall fashions. Put me in jeans and a sweater and I look like I've gained 10 pounds. (Although I did wear my boots to church on Sunday because I was sick of painting my toenails).

As I type here with semi-frozen fingers ( it is still September right?) I find myself looking forward eagerly for our move to Houston. Where instead of finding myself bone-chillingly cold ( in the Northwest no less, nothing like Chicago), I will sweat too much for a few months a year. I can handle that.

Fall to me means being able to go to Costco at 2:00pm without getting heatstroke when I load my goods into my car. But it also means the swimming pool is too cold. A tough trade-off.

Fall has always been and will always be my favorite season. PDaddy is right though, it will take on new meaning with the beginning of school.

So . . . is that, like, next year? Miss Dub seems totally ready.

We enjoyed our fireplace for the first time this season... so good... so good. As you know, I am a fall girl, through and through. (I do share your winter anxiety. I reccommed just pretending it won't happen this year.)

All people who were reared in SoCal hate real winters. I never dream of a white Christmas. I dream of a Christmas in the 70s, going to the Brea mall to shop for presents with the windows down in the car. That is Winter.

By the way, I found your blog through a friend of a friend of a friend (I think that is how many times removed).

Good luck in Chicago. My parents live there too (Aurora)and after 24 SoCal Winters, we hear a lot of moaning and complaining every winter from them. Can't say I blame them, though.

I will not miss summer. I can't wait for Fall and Winter and Spring, but I'm not a summer fan. Maybe I should say I'm not a Texas summer fan--too sticky, too sweaty, too muggy.

Happy Autumn, Mrs. Dub!

Mrs. Dub, I so enjoy reading your blog. It always brightens my day.
I too LOVE the fall, but, I know I am crazy, I also LOVE the winter! guess that is what happens when you grow up in the mid-west. However, the winters now are nothing like they use to be. I like the winters with SNOW. Not this BITTER BITTER cold we have for months on end...then, I am not much of a winter fan, and start really really missing the spring and fall...
