Positive power

I recently read The Secret.

And let me let you in on a secret about The Secret: There is no secret.

I kept waiting for some bizarre confession, like "rub yourself with butter four times and day while chanting, 'I love macramé!' and you'll be rich and famous."

But instead the whole book was about faith. Faith in a higher power, which the author calls "The Universe" and I call "Heavenly Father." And faith in yourself.

Having faith in God is complicated, of course, but it's easier most times than having faith in yourself. God is omniscient, omnipresent, perfect. And me? Well, let's just say I'm a little rough around the edges.

It's so hard to think positively about yourself when we live in a world that makes a living off of our weaknesses. We're considered haughty or ignorant if we think we're smart or talented or, heaven forbid, beautiful.

(Mariann Williamson's famous passage comes to mind: "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.")

Thinking well of ourselves CAN make a huge difference. Will it magnetically bring you lavish results as The Secret promises? The jury (and my $25,000 check) is still out. However, you will feel better about yourself. And when you truly feel good, you feel optimistic. And when you feel optimistic, you feel empowered. And when you are empowered, nothing can stop you.

Try it. Watch your thoughts today and turn every negative phrase into a positive thought.

Instead of, "I'm so fat!" ... Say, "I'm perfect the way I am. I make good food choices. I am able to remake my body right now."

It sounds really hoaky, but it works. Pretty soon you'll think you're so perfect that you will become perfect.

And then you'll die.

'Cause I was sort of thinking that The Secret involved some sort of eternal life serum, but, alas, death is still included.

But at least you'll have a lived a good life.

I watched the Oprah episode on "The Secret" and just kept yelling at the screen because everything they said was all garbage. I just felt like the person on stage was rambling nonsense and every once in a while the audience would erupt in cheers for no reason. And I also caught on really quickly who the "universe" was.

that's the second time in less than 24 hours that i've heard that quote... what a great thing to think about often.

as for "the secret"... i haven't read it. but i have friends who swear by it. however, the first time i heard about it, it was being endorsed in a business meeting by a millionaire with hairplugs who has bankrupted his company a couple of times... at that point, i knew it probably wasn't the book for me. :)

I LOVE reading your blog! I have to say, though, that so many people in so many books try and present something new and different. When in reality- most of us have all of the "secrets" we need already! That's why I try not to read anything over a 9th grade reading level! You want a great book? Have you ever read The Twits by Roald Dahl? It's a good one with many quotable lines. Check it out!

Thank you! I really needed this as I currently feel like I am losing my mind and myself and I just want to jump in bed. I will be more positive today!!

I was disappointed by the Secret too. Isn't it basically all about the power of positive thinking, just in a different package? But it's true, humans are too negative. So the message may not have worked on me, but if there are millions of people walking around thinking positively about themselves and others, I say the Secret is a good thing. Good goes round y'all, so even if the Secret isn't your secret, be glad your neighbor believes in something for a change.

Hmm.. I must check out this book. I just got off the phone with my mom where our conversation included the phrase, perhaps I lack the faith! I'll have to see what I can get out of the secret.

here's what i think of "the secret" : duh!

here's a line that my mom told me ALL the time growing up: if you believe it, you achieve it. if you doubt it, you go without it.

i do not, however, believe that positive thinking can cure diseases (unless said disease is caused by stress or something else controllable). i also do not believe that every person in a bad situation is only there b/c of a bad attitude.

my point: of course positive thinking is a good thing. i even believe that you can will things to happen... positive and negative things, but i think that the book/dvd/philosophy goes overboard...

It is all about packaging! I actually thought there was some good stuff on that Oprah show.

I believe in the Secret, Faith, positive thinking, and prayer. They all play off each other. I totally believe we can all have a charmed life. It is really about our perspective too.

I, admittedly, have not read it. So, I was a bit of a downer about the whole trend. I kept thinking, "didn't we all know this already?!"

I have one friend who went on and on about it one day... "I feel the happy thoughts that I will have when I..." blah blah blah.

And, when laughing about her descriptions to her husband, he made the following observation. "Every six months she goes in to have a cyst biopsied. Every six months she cries and is convinced she will be diagnosed with cancer. Last week she had a smile on her face. Gave our children a kiss. And, announced to me that she couldn't wait to grow old." With that she left the house. The cyst was, in fact, benign."

And, so my opinion is certainly... whatever gets you there, it's a good place to be.

Doug picked it up at Costco saying he wanted to read it:
D: "Let's get this at the library...it sounds kinda like the DaVinci Code!"
E: "Uh...Honey? It's non-fiction!"
D: "Oh! Nevermind then!"

So I have to admit that I absolutely LOVE your blog. When I read this post I knew that we were really blogging kindred spirits!

I have learned a lot about the principals taught in The Secret over the last 5 years - and I agree that there really is no secret. Maybe it's more of a remembering of what we already know.

I comment on your blog about a 1/4 of the time, but for these purposes, I will remain "anon"....

I have a father who has been out of work for 5 years, lost his home and still had 3 teenagers at home, and his wife. He swears by the secret, and because it was introduced to me by him, I kinda puke at even the words. He bought a copy for everyone in our family and put his favorite scriptures in it that correlate, Universe=God, etc.

He clings to the promise of the book so much that he seems to have forgotten the "taking action" part.

There's a lot to be said about the "power of positive thinking", but then we've got to get up and go to work!
