Someone very special to me, and likely many of you, passed away this morning. Upon hearing the news of his passing, I immediately burst into tears. (And really scared Mr. Dub when I raced into the bathroom in hysterics to tell him that someone had died. Mr. Dub was saddened by the news, of course, but relieved to hear it wasn't an immediate family member.)
President James E. Faust may not be a name familiar to all of you, but he was a great world leader within and without the LDS Church. He was a great lawyer, a great legislator and great football player back in the day.
He loved everyone, but had a special place in his heart for the Brazilian people. And his adoration for his wife Ruth and their five children was inspiring.
He was 87 and had been troubled by Parkinson's disease in recent years. But seeing him give public addresses from a comfy wingback chair rather than standing at the pulpit only made him more personable to me. So I was surprised by his passing, which may or may not have been expected.
Like most people, I've been anxious for the last 10 years that we might lose our beloved prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley, to old age. But at 97, he keeps on ticking! Yet, I didn't expect one of his counselors to go before him. And the sad reality is that he, too, will leave this life ... probably sooner than later.
And that's a very hard idea to handle because President Hinckley, like President Faust, is so dear to me.
It's hard to convey the love the Latter-day Saint people have for their leaders. I think what helps is that they are loving, empathetic, gentle and humorous. They feel more like friends than superiors.
But in the great goodness of this glorious gospel, there is a simple organization that quickly fills the positions with new leaders. And we don't blink before sustaining them because we understand the order. Soon we'll embrace a new member of the First Presidency (and likely a new apostle).
I apologize to those who don't frequent this blog for religious banter. The following paragraph is for you:
Something funny happened. Random pop culture reference. Babies are tricky lil' devils. Word.
For the rest of you, I suggest we take some time today to reflect on President Faust's great life, say some prayers for his wife and family and read one of his talks.
I like this one.
Goodbye, friend!

I cried hard on the day he delivered that talk you linked to. Partially because of the contrast between his powerful words and his weak body. We've lost a fine man.
I cannot begin to describe my love and admiration for this great man. His talks were among my most favorite and I looked forward to hearing from him at every conference. His presence will surely me missed.
His granddaughter was my YW leader in Las Vegas and she was awesome. I liked to think I had some sort of connection to him because I knew her. (silly, I know). He will be missed. Thanks for this post... I had no idea until I visited today.
oh, i didn't know either. he was a friend of neal's dad and always one of my favorites, too.
:(
He's one of the only apostles I've gotten to meet face to face; a chance meeting at the airport when we were seeing my grandma off on one of her missions... he's such a sweet man and yes he gave such wonderful conference talks. He will definitely be missed.
I am sad this morning too. I remember seeing him with his family at Hires about 10 years ago. He is one of the few apostles I have seen live. I have shed a few tears too because of this sad news. I will miss his inspring talks.
Thanks for giving him a small tribute!
i was so proud of myself for maintaining my composure this morning when i heard the news... until i read your post. thank you for your tribute. he truly is one the noble and great.
today truly is a sad day. I adored Pres. Faust.
thanks for the memorial. now maybe him and tammy faye can strike a bond. i have no doubts that she will accept the gospel quickly.
thank-you for your tribute. He will be missed
I was shocked to hear of his passing, but immediately thought of how happy he must be to now be "home"!
Thank you for that beautiful post and tribute to a wonderful man!
Thank you so much for posting this. I had not heard the news until I read this. You shard this beautifully. He was a great and humble man who I will be thinking of a lot today.
This was a wonderful tribute. He was such an interesting speaker, and he will be missed.
Lawyers haven't often distinquished themselves scripturally or been well-regarded secularly. As a second generation lawyer, Pres. Faust broke from that mold but reflected his professional training in the wonderful reasoning, insights, and phrasing of his discourses. "Responsibilities of Shepherds" (Ensign, May 1995, p 45) is a personal favorite. I'd love to listen across the veil to a conversation among he, Howard W. Hunter, Bruce R. McKonkie, Marion G. Romney, J. Reuben Clark, and others who left the Law for the Lord. I will miss him.
the forgivness talk was something that really stood out to me too and not many GC talks keep me listening.
what a great tribute. he was the bizzomp! and you're right, those talks he gave in that big soft red chair made it seem like he was in my front room. he's definitely been one of my favorite speakers because he's so darned sincere.
Thank you for giving a tribute! I really loved the talk he just gave in conference...I am so grateful for these wonderful men who are great examples to us and live what they speak and believe. Also- like you said- it feels like we are one step closer to losing our dear prophet- he almost seems to be immortal... what an amazing man he is... I love him dearly. The church is true.
Elder Faust looked great at age 87. Yes Im a know-it-all. To bad he didn't live to the age 97, woulda made a great prophet.
Jason
Sorry to leave out my last name, that's Jason Hendricks - remember me?
Pres Faust is the author of many of my favorite talks/lessons. He was an amazing, leader, man, Apostle, whom I will miss. The talk you linked was amazing. I will miss his gravelly voice as he gave it.
