Store clerk: Ma'am?
Me: (Holding a handful of cute tops.) Yes?
Store clerk: Are you aware this is the junior's section?
Me: (Thinking, "This is where I always shop.") Yeah.
Store clerk: Well, I didn't want you to waste your time in the wrong section. The women's department is over there.
Me: Thanks.
Am I too old for the junior's section?

in my humble "i love being grumpy" carebear t-shirt wearing opinion... no freaking way!! especially you and your stylish ways... that clerk just has no vision of what can be done with a cute top from the juniors department.
OH!... and she DIDN'T call you MA'AM!?!
Perhaps what she really meant was "These clothes are somewhat affordable. Perhaps you would like to go over to the women's section so we can rip you off even more."
I used to like when people would tell me I was in the plus section and then I would have to fess up that actually I was too fat for "regular" women's clothes.
wow. the nerve of some people. you're totally adorable and can totally rock "junior" clothes. don't even let that phase you!
She is definitely wrong. I'm pretty sure I'm older than you, and I know I'm less stylish than you, but I still peruse the clearance rack of the Juniors from time to time. (I will admit that I'm a little intimidated to go into stores like Abercrombie and Fitch -- I'm sure they'll look at me and say, um, the Gap is just down the way.) I don't think the "rules" are the same as they once were -- young moms are more stylish now, thank goodness.
oh dear. i have pondered this question myself many times. i don't want to be one of those moms who dresses like her teenaged daughters. so i guess once mabel hits puberty, it will be time for me to move on to the womens section. that gives me, like, 8 more years.
i heart forever 21. i am 29.
it's all good.
Just rude! My jaw dropped at the nerve. Ew, I would have been ticked!
EW EW EWWWWWWWWW!!!
you are not too old.
some people are so dumb. between getting handed the kids menu at restaurants and hearing comments like that, how old are we supposed to think we look?!?
My vote: Just Rude!
the way i see it is if you can fit into the clothing then you're in the right section... i shop in juniors for sure, but i also shop in womens (in fact, i purchased one top from womens and a dress and sweater from juniors in the same store last night)... so, mrs. dub, to answer your question: she is rude--ridiculously rude!
No way you're not too old! Plleeease! I have a complex about looking like a teenage mother so I'm always asking myself if I look too young. I think what really matters is how we wear those junior clothes. I know I'm not ready for jeans up to my chest yet, so I'll take the junior section for now!
"Oh... I'm sorry. I was going to buy $500 worth of clothing today... but since you've been so kind and helpful, perhaps I will go to some other store. I'll be sure and let the store manager in on why I won't be shopping here anymore."
NO! i feel like junior's is for anyone 13-35. i just went to forever 21 two nights ago and bought myself some very cute, very junior shirts.
She was rude.
I think you are pushing it once you are in your 30s like me.
I think about that too. And when the Women's department starts carrying stylish fitted clothing, then I will start looking through it.
Also, I agree with mb about affordability. I ended up at a Nordstrom once, and saw $200 skirts in the women's section, went upstairs to juniors and found identical skirts for $20.
maybe she was just trying to give you something super funny to blog about. didn't i tell you that you were getting famous?
i'd like to know what she was wearing.
she was actually a 50-something Asian woman in chinos. and for the record, she also hounded me to get a macey's card.
My honest answer;
Yes, we are probably all a little too old for most of the junior's section.
My feeling on the topic:
GOOD FOR YOU!!!
Having a few years on you, I have been thinking about this SO MUCH lately. Regarding the rudeness of said comment, I seriously can't believe this woman has a career in retail. I think the chances that the average female shopper has lost her way in a store and is about to make the life-altering mistake of buying clothes from a department other than the one she intended to shop in are pretty slim. So yeah, she was rude.
But I have started to realize that I have personally outgrown the junior's section (in more ways than one!). First, my job has required me to make a shift from the Forever 21s to the Ann Taylors of the world. Once you do it with the career clothes, you start to do it with the casual ones as well. And given the, er, generous sizing in the "misses" section, it is an ego-blow to go to the juniors section and realize you need something two sizes bigger than the number you're used to wearing.
Also, I used to get a big kick out of being early-thirties and having people mistake me for a late teen. For reasons I can't explain, that thrill has recently turned to embarassment, because in those instances where it happens, I realize I'm dressed too young for my age. I don't know how or when this shift happened, but now I'm more eager for people to recognize and respect my years of experience than tell me I look younger than I am.
Point is (yes, I have one), I think the "too old for juniors" issue is a personal one and has less to do with age than lifestyle and other things. At the end of the day, everyone should feel free to wear whatever suits their personal sense of style, and any naysayers (especially retail clerks) should keep their criticisms to themselves.
hey, I just (as in two days ago) bought a red shirt dress to be paired with a low-slung belt and put over jeans in the junior's section of none other than our beloved Target. I have been looking for just such a shirt dress for MONTHS, it was red, it fits perfectly and was only $13. so do I care that I was getting the eye from mothers shopping for their tweens as I held it up to myself for a size guestamate? no. I think the key is this: if you look at yourself and resemble lindsay lohan or brittany spears, it's time to move on - otherwise, if the item in question lends to a sense of more timeless (read trendy is okay, too - just not trashy) fashion and one cannot tell which section it was purchased from, then keep you eyes peeled for bargain finds to be had in sections other than the where you "should" be shopping.
Thanks, all for introducing me to a great website I didn't know about. Forever21.com. :) I'm not 21. Plus online no one is going to point that out to me! ughgh! people! Seriously!!
Tell me this did not not happen. She is rude!
He He He...When they stop selling pleated pants and jeans that come up to your boobs I'll shop in the women's department.
She does have a point for those ridiculously surgically altered women like the one I saw in the parking lot at the grocery store the other day. I was on the phone sitting in my car and almost peed myself laughing. She was wearing the tightest jeans ever that were studded and frayed with a studded leapord belt, midrif showing t-shirt, tons of make up and platforms. Not bad normally, but she definitely has some money invested in her body and looked so trampy..she was probably 55 and trying to look 16!
The biggest problem is that there is no middle ground! I’m a little too old for Juniors (being older than you, Mrs. Dub) but way too young for the geriatric women’s section. If I want to find age-appropriate clothes for me it’s Banana, Anne Taylor Loft, and Anthropologie—and those prices aren’t kidding around.
Dear Department Stores,
HELLO, I’m in my 30s. I don’t want to dress like a teenager. I don’t want to dress like my mother-in-law. A little middle ground would be NICE.
