HTT - Upfront Edition

Today’s Hot Topic is a tragic one that can only begin with this heated declaration:

Movies and TV suck.

Like, for real.

As members of Blockbuster Online, we have the privilege of viewing nearly all new releases, minus those rated-R ones. (Which may make this topic null and void, except I can’t endure all the drugs, sex, violence and potty mouths to explore that.)

I usually base my selections on previews, some which almost make me call a babysitter until I remember ticket prices these days. (What are we up to? $35? $40? And don’t get me started on the cost of Jujubes.) But when the movies come out on DVD – like, three weeks laterI am disappointed time and time again.

Last weekend, it was “Catch and Release,” starring Jennifer Garner, who I’m pretty confident would be my new best friend if given the chance to meet me. But even her dimples couldn’t save this flop. It was like there were actual pieces of the script that had gone missing, but no one cared enough to find them.

I won’t even talk about “The Lake House,” which may be the worst piece of celluloid in decades. That film was clearly written in an obscure tribal language and then half-heartedly translated into English. Hence it’s total nonsensicality.

The only good thing about all of this is that my expectations are so low that anything vaguely entertaining gets my star of approval. And yet, I’ve only given out stars to a handful of recent flicks.

Same goes for TV.

This week is the “upfronts” in NYC, where all the networks announce their fall schedules, and thereby determine the fate of struggling series and hopeful pilots. Since my dear friend, Kristin, has the inside scoop on this stuff, I’ve been privy to the plots of some new shows.

Let’s just say you could summarize all of them by filling in the blanks:
“It’s ‘Desperate Housewives’ but with __________.”
“It’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ but set in ____________.”
“It’s ‘Sex and the City’ if ___________ were in charge.”

To which you can fill in my response:
“The ___ network is totally devoid of creativity and ingenuity.”

Seriously, “Veronica Mars” – whose first seasons was akin to “My So-called Life” - is likely getting axed but “Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll” will live on … and on … and on.

Here’s what we currently TiVo:
“The Office”
“24”
“Lost”
“Veronica Mars”
“Psych”

"Project Runway"
“Iron Chef America”
Gilmore Girls” – which takes its final bow tonight!

That’s it. And I’m not even that excited about many of those shows – either because they’ve lost their touch after a few seasons (24, VM & GG), or I wish I never started to watch them because they play with my mind and emotions (Lost).

The rest of TV makes me a little annoyed. Although I’m sure there are some good shows out there I’m missing, which is why you must plead their case in the comments section below.

I mean, is any out there actually watching “Two and Half Men”? Because someone clearly is, according to my pal, Nielsen.

What about you?

Do you think TV and movies are at their prime or prime for a makeover?

Do tell.

p.s. How much do you want Jim and Pam to kiss and make up? (Acceptable answers: "A lot," or "Mucho much.")

Amen to you. I was also very dissapointed in Catch and Release and the Lake House. I am embarrassed for Sandra Bullock for even participating in that movie. TV shows now are trash but hopefully "The Office" will live on forever and ever. Hooray for Pam walking on hot coals and telling Jim how she felt. They are more than welcome to kiss and make up RIGHT NOW!

You should watch "How It's Made" on the Dicovery Channel. It's like the best of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood without anything from his neighborhood. Just an hour full of showing how things are made. It's awesome.

TV is OUT. Blogging IN.(Although I'm hoping "So you think you can Dance" gives me something to look forward to this summer!!!)

Here's what I want: ONE good show per night. I want all 200 of my channels to get together and make that happen.

Lately, we started bypassing the mediocre tv and movies (of which there is plenty) and going straight to the REALLY bad stuff. At some level, Judge Mathis and Tokyo Drift are sadly entertaining.

I don't want them to kiss (again) if it is going to end tragically (again) and tear at my heartstrings (again).

i miss arrested development. big time.

have you seen shear genius? it is a nice filler until project runway comes back.

Jim and Pam = Mucho much, except the whole Karen factor. I like her character. She will probably get the corporate job in NYC that Micheal is after and then the love triangle will end. Then Jim and Pam will be able to make up.

You should check out "Dress My Nest" on the Style channel.

Also, I'm glad you are a Gilmore fan too (adieu, tonight!).

I second pretty much your entire post. You haven't seen bad until you catch the little gem of a film Jim and I watched over the weekend - "The Covenant." Yeah, don't even bother. So. Awful. Not that I was expecting much. I saw "Catch and Release" at the theater and laughed out loud during the scene where she slaps the guy and he grabs her wrists and then, of course, they kiss. Bad, bad movie.

As TV goes, we're still totally on the LOST bandwagon and The Office never disappoints. Except sometimes it gets a little crude for my taste. Like "how did this make it past the censors?" crude. Jim and I both watch (and love) America's Next Top Model.

I do like that Karen, but Pam and Jim are soulmates. Don't mess with soulmates.

I am a TVaholic!!! I love LOST, but I am completely annoyed with it. I love 24, but I am bored with it.

You want some trach TV----Bachelor! I can't believe I just admitted that.

Maybe they can turn Office into a movie. I think it would be great!

Leslie said...

rachie, dear, i watch the bachelor, too. i know, it's really sad, and even more tragic that i haven't missed a single season. so bevin or tessa? me and andy are both undecided. I'm sure danielle is out (i haven't watched last night's yet, so don't tell me).
lost, the office, intervention (THE best show, it's on A&E), and that is seriously IT. we totally don't watch tv anymore excepting those 3 shows. until project runway comes back, which may or may not coincide with the millennium. seriously, hello!?
it's all about blogging, laundry, and magazines at night around here (at least for me).

Yeah, I just read a horribly disappointing article about the upfronts wherein NBC's response to the fact that Heroes was their only hit last season was to produce five more shows exactly like Heroes for the fall (never seen it--not meant as a knock on Heroes or anything). When are they going to realize that the reason certain shows are breakout hits each season is because they are new and refreshing rather than some rehash of a past success?

That said, when I have time for TV, I love me some Office and Gilmore Girls. I also miss Arrested Development. Ugly Betty is a surprise fave, but it's not for everyone. And my total guilty tivoed pleasures are Project Runway and (gulp) Divine Design with Candice Olsen. (Although I'm sad to say I walked past the line for the PR auditions in downtown LA a month or two ago and none of the people or their clothes looked very exciting, so we'll see...)

Oh, and I forgot! I must be soulmates with anonymous, because my favorite thing as a kid were the Picture Picture clips on Mr. Rogers where they showed how crayons and sweaters and violins and whathaveyou are made. Will definitely be checking out that Discovery show.

LOST: what the?? how will it ever end? can it get any crazier? I guess we'll watch and see tomorrow. because you know we have to watch and see. eew and jack has been such a jerk the last few weeks I can't stand him.

I'm also hooked on ER, which I still say is better than ever - if you can get past the gay/lesbian, anti-Iraq, pro-medicare, etc crap that has nothing to do with the REAL story they love to throw in.

oh and I've started a new one: notes from the underbelly. mostly funny because I was just preggers... a little crude sometimes though.

oh as far as good wholesome entertainment: PLANET EARTH on discovery is very, very cool.

love me some reality tv. always have, always will. i am looking forward to another season of "so you think you can dance." that show got me through last summer. as far as the biggest guilty pleasure - girls next door. that's right, a little hef and a few of his girlfriends. i love watching this show for one reason only, it is amazing to me that these girls seriously think that they are in love with this 80 year old man who has other girlfriends and, they really believe that they have a chance of having a family with him and such. it's a must see.

I agree. Not much quality or originality--each modest success spawns countless sequels and clones. On non-network, I like Planet Earth & Myth Busters. My guilty pleasure is the CSI franchise (Vegas for forensics, NY for pretty cast [Senise & Kanakaradees look better to me than you young'uns], Miami for photography and soundtrack [a la Miami Vice/Silk Stockings] and to ridicule David Caruso). Lost lost me, Heros wasn't heroic, reality is unreal (kinda liked Fear Factor), briefly enjoyed Raines, laugh at The Office, becoming bored with Gray's, miss Scrubs but everything is on Thursday. I'd pay to watch Sandra Bullock chew gum, but Premonition was awful - guess I should have seen it coming.

We manage to find plenty of TV that we love on most nights. Mon. it's How I Met Your Mother (love Neil Patrick Harris) and 24 (which finally got exciting the past few weeks) and my hubs watches Heroes (he loves it, too wacko for me). We've also always been fans of the Law and Orders, our fave being SVU on Tues. We have a full line-up on Thurs... Survivor (this season was particularly entertaining) & CSI (the original is the only one we love), and the entire NBC line-up (Earl, Office, 30 Rock, & Scrubs) plus I've watched ER from DAY 1... so I'm a total fan. Also would watch Gray's... but I'll have to catch up when season 3 comes out on DVD. This leaves plenty of stuff on Tivo to watch on Fri. Then on Sun. it's Without a Trace and love love love Amazing Race. Summertime there's nothing that we really love... so we have the Office on DVD, most seasons of Seinfeld, and plenty of movies to catch up on...
I also love the Food Network. My current fave is Ace of Cakes. Love it.
Do we watch too much TV? Obviously. But we do it together... and I usually am doing laundry or working while it's on. :) I guess I still think there are plenty of things to watch.

We loved that new show Smith with Ray Liota that was on 3 whole weeks. They always cancel the new shows I get attached to.

Kate said...

Mucho much!

liz said...

I can always get sucked in by a crime drama -- Law and Order, CSI, Without a Trace, Cold Case, Criminal Minds. And you don't have to watch them every single week to keep up. But, sometimes they give me bizarre and disturbing dreams. I'm pretty suggestible that way. For a comedy, I like 30 Rock most weeks, though I think it's had kind of an uneven first season. My movie queue is mostly full of documentaries and foreign films at the moment -- the big studio releases disappoint every time.

I was completely hooked on Friends for years. My husband used to make fun of me because occasionally we would be having a conversation and I would casually throw in, "Well, Monica said that..." He often accused me of claiming THE 6 Friends as my friends. When Joey, the spin off, started airing...I was in heaven. Okay, it was pretty lame and didn't even last a whole season. But just seeing Joey each week felt like I was still keeping in touch with my Friends.

I watch ER, The Office, and 30 Rock...but my Friends are missing. Those 6 aren't the best at keeping in touch. Darn them.

p.s. their is this reality tv show on the speed channel called Set Up. My husbands business partner is on it - his name is Kenton. To tell you the truth I never even knew this channel was there before this.....anyways, he is an amature racer - so watch it.

Agree. I love, love, love Tivo! I watch the Office (we watched the original BBC version before and loved it!), Ellen, Grey's, Brothers & Sisters (I know, I know, my husband can't stand it!), GG (bittersweet it's ending, such a waste of a season - Lorelai being married to Christopher - whatever!), and my sister Rachel got me hooked on How I Met Your Mother which I am so glad is continuing - it makes me laugh so hard (a bit naughty though!).

So funny that this is your post today- mine is about all of the crap I am watching tonight.

I am a total trash TV watcher. I even lowered my standards to watch The Bachelor because I needed something to occupy my Monday nights. I have a love/hate relationship with LOST. But my fave of all time is Grey's Anatomy, and I am feeling VERY disappointed in it lately. It seriously hurts my feelings when my favorite shows stop being good.

tara said...

so just kiss and make up already would ya?! But then it'd all be over. How could Micheal leave Scranton? But then the love-gone-bad could be interesting out at corporate with Michael having to work in the same office with Jan... who will stay and who will go? I just don't know.

And LOST, a-hem. I have a lump in my throat. Seriously. Last week was very scary!

and thats about all i watch.

I'm an old movie critic so you're preaching to the choir.

Why on EARTH would you watch the Lake House thinking it would be anything but trash? You need to find a movie reviewer you trust, try Eric D. Snider, to help guide your precious viewing time.

This week you need to go to the theater and watch The Waitress. You will not be disappointed.

Here's what's missing from your TV line up:
Friday Night Lights. Must MUST MUST SEE. It's not really about football and it's got the best married couple on TV, hands down.

If you aren't watching 30 Rock, stop, repent, and start watching. Catch up online at nbc.com. Give it a couple episodes to sink in, it's one of those that grows on you.

The new Battlestar Galactica (really.)

I'll second that Notes From the Underbelly has some potential, if they don't screw it up.

Now, seriously, go rent the first couple seasons of Battlestar and thank me later.

oh the sadness. tonight's gg made my sister and me cry (no, we're not sad, but the series finale was)...

if i could only have 2 shows ever: the office and gg. but soon project runway will be back, and a small part of the void will be filled.

My TiVo (or watch live) List...

Little People, Big World
Jon & Kate plus Eight
Ugly Betty
The Office
Lost
Grey's Anatomy
30 Rock
Intervention
Ace of Cakes
Gene Simmons reality show (did I just admit that? yes, yes I did.)...
Medium

I think of TV more as "brain candy", consumed in moderation can give you a nice little high with no nutritional value. I watch probably 1-2 shows a night after the kids are in bed...followed by voracious reading at bedtime to retrieve brain cells.

As for movies, wow, I haven't seen one worth spending $3.99 on PPV in a long, long while. Stranger than Fiction was the last one I saw that was mildly amusing ("I brought you flours"). My husband didn't make it through the first half hour.

k8 said...

everyone within the sound of my voice...please, please PLEASE watch Friday Night Lights. I am not kidding when I say it the best show on televion. Ever.

In case you are afraid it's a show about football, it's not. It's about love and marriage and family and doing the right thing...I honestly love it so much that I miss the characters right now.

I wrote a review on my blog when i discovered the show and watched about seven episodes in a row

http://replikate.blogspot.com/2007/03/clear-eyes-full-hearts-cant-lose.html

and between that, The Office, Gilmore Girls and Scrubs...I don't need any other TV!

So, I'm going backwards in your HTT's, but I figured I'd comment here too. If I listed all the shows I watched it would probably be as long as my last comment...too long. I'll touch on some of my faves and I won't even include the ones that have been canceled for next season, i.e. What About Brian.
Brother's and Sister's is great. My husband actually watches it with me. I second the greatness of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) on How I Met Your Mother. I actually do watch Two and a Half Men. I kept hearing all the hype and never had interest until I liked every show on CBS's Monday night line up and happened to start watching it. It can be funny, but has lots of sexual inuindo. Little People, Big World. I love the mom on that show. She's so real. I could keep going, but then I wouldn't keep my promise of trying to keep my comment short. I just hate how the networks don't give any shows a chance. They are always to quick to cancel!
