Since I’m on a frivolous kick these days, it’s only natural that today’s Hot Topic follow suit.
The topic is music and the heat is on!
Admittedly, I’m borrowing this topic from my bro-in-law, who recently wrote about his personal music evolution here.
Everyone’s music preferences have their own story. Mine is just harder to trace since it began at birth. I was born into a home with a hearty record collection, with a significant amount of Neil Diamond, John Denver and Cat Stevens.
“Sweet Caroline” is still sweet to me. “Country Roads” takes me home to my childhood. And a ride on the “Peace Train” always brings a smile to my face.
But over the years, I got hip to current music. Like in kindergarten, when my siblings and I were rewarded with albums for our good grades. (Laura Brannigan, Bon Jovi and Michael Jackson were among our picks.) Fourth grade, I got deep into The Beatles. Sixth grade, I got hooked on Jane’s Addiction. Seventh grade, I fell in love with Radiohead. (Still smitten, by the way.)
I even had a stint in rock and roll with my “band,” Trees without Roots. Our killer cover of STP and Screaming Trees at the eighth grade graduation is still famous in some parts of Scottsdale.
Then it was onto high school and tons of alternative, punk rock and rockabilly bands. I discovered Björk . I rocked out to Operation Ivy. I familiarized myself with the classics – The Clash, The Ramones, Elvis Costello.
Then I got to college and embraced indie and emo with a passion. And I discovered the world of “workout” music, which is a great excuse to own hip-hop and rap music when you think you’re too good for it. And really, aren’t we all?
(As for me and my house, however, we will not listen to country music. Sorry. I feel it dulls my musical senses.)
These days, sadly, I’m not really into music. Sometimes I hear good tunes and download them - most of the time it's mellow girl music making the rounds on MTV. Which makes me happy on one hand – the fact that I’m mature enough to be mainstream. And makes me sad on the other – that I’m too old to keep ahead of music.
I don’t know why I don’t care about music like I used to. Maybe because new music can’t compete with the great memories that play in synch with old favorites. Or maybe because I can’t love music half-heartedly. It’s a full-time job for me, which doesn’t mesh with mommyhood.
So I plead with you to join my meme, in loving tribute to our favorite melodies.
1. Name one group/artist you love the mostest. For me, it’s Radiohead.
2. Name one group/artist you would like to push off a cliff. For me, it’s Barenaked Ladies.
3. Name one group/artist that will always take you back in time. For me, it’s Cowboy Junkies.
4. Name one new group/artist you can’t live without. For me, it’s Sia.
5. Name one group/artist that started your musical evolution. For me, it’s Simple Minds.
6. Name one word that best describes your music tastes. For me, it’s intense.
Post comments.
Please.
(Ooh, that reminds me of a fave Dramarama song. Where’s my iPod?)

My parents were only into classical music so it took me a long time to get into pop. I think the 'oldies' station in 6th grade was my introduction to the world. The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, 60s pop expanded my world. From there I eventually discovered the rest of pop. U2 was my favorite band all through junior high and high school. And, unlike you, I'm proud of my hiphop and r&b collection.
Since the answers to your questions depend on the day for me, I will respond according to TODAY.
1. Love the most today: Keane
2. Push off the cliff: Queen
3. Back in time: The Cure
4. New group: The Mary Onettes
5. Music Evolution: The Belle Stars marked my entry into modern pop.
6. One word to describe: all-embracing
Wow!! One of my favorite topics of all time. I’ll try to keep my comments to <1000 words. I have fond childhood memories of Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens, Billy Joel, & Paul Simon. When I was old enough my dad bought me a Led Zeppelin tape and a Cream tape, & I was hooked. Still love most of that stuff, & I primarily stuck with the 60’s & 70’s through much of high school. My world completely opened up when I had the great privilege of living with your Sis in college and I decided I liked her music better than mine! Apparently there was a LOT of really good modern music out there. Her influence changed me from the girl who copied all of her boyfriend’s Rush CDs, to the girl who was sneaking down to Vegas to see a Primus/Fishbone show. I’m indebted to ya Gin!! I worked at a CD store from ages 21-25 & felt like I knew it all… and from there came my kids and the steady decline of my modern music awareness. I tried to get into the emo/indie thing but much of it is so whiny & lacks substance. I wanted to love Modest Mouse, really I did.
1. Bestest: As much as I don’t want to sound like a copycat, I’m afraid it’s Radiohead. I can’t think of anyone better. I would drop everything to see them again in concert.
2. Cliff-bound: Dead Milkmen. I feel like I should “get” them but I never did. Hubs loves to quote them & drive me crazy.
3. Back in time? Back to which time? Too many to count… How about the Beastie Boys – they always evoke memories of happy times. And I L-O-V-E-D Luscious Jackson back in the day.
4. New group: embarrassing but I don’t have a lot of really NEW faves. How about Muse; I would love to see them in concert & I love to rock out to them in the car when I can. The dude’s a killer pianist too.
5. Started it all: may I name two albums? Pearl Jam Ten & RHCP Blood Sugar…
6. Description: Well-rounded. Without the country.
1. Name one group/artist you love the mostest. MODEST MOUSE/BELLE AND SEABASS
2. Name one group/artist you would like to push off a cliff. NICKLEBACK/CREED/DAUGHTRY
3. Name one group/artist that will always take you back in time. NOFX
4. Name one new group/artist you can’t live without. STARS/THE BLOW
5. Name one group/artist that started your musical evolution. THE CRANBERRIES
6. Name one word that best describes your music tastes. BLINGBLAM
This morning I listened to my 50 cent cd. that is just how awesome i am.
-tittybaby
why am i so obsessed with lists? haha. here goes:
1. Name one group/artist you love the mostest. U2 (your husband has yet to disown me as a friend because of this, which i very much appreciate)
2. Name one group/artist you would like to push off a cliff. DESTINY'S CHILD (this hatred also extends to any off-shoot of Destiny's Child... aka. beyonce)
3. Name one group/artist that will always take you back in time. INXS
4. Name one new group/artist you can’t live without. ROGUE WAVE
5. Name one group/artist that started your musical evolution. NIRVANA (which also simultaneously started the devolution of my wardrobe in highschool)
6. Name one word that best describes your music tastes. SENTIMENTAL (every song reminds me of something or someone or somewhere)
1. Name one group/artist you love the mostest. ~ In all honesty... anything I can sing or dance to! I really don't have a favorite.
2. Name one group/artist you would like to push off a cliff. ~ Dave Matthews Band... but only because his sound just doesn't appeal to me. I've honestly never really listened to it to really know if I like it or not =/
3. Name one group/artist that will always take you back in time. ~ David Allen Coe, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard
4. Name one new group/artist you can’t live without. ~ New stuff is always coming out... so I think I'd be ok if I had to lose some, I'm sure eventually I'd forget it anyway. And if not, there would always be a way to get it :P
5. Name one group/artist that started your musical evolution. ~ Can't say I can link it to a specific band... but I remember mocking country music so much that it made us start liking it hahahah!
6. Name one word that best describes your music tastes. ~ Well rounded... but with country included!! :) Boo to all you country music haters! :P
Sara is too kind. I think we were mutually influential on each other's music tastes, but she quickly surpassed my indie wherewithall when she started working at the CD store. Also, if Uncle Craig reads this blog, the S girls (and me in particular) MUST give a shout-out to him for expanding our musical horizons and making us mix tapes from his pristine album and CD collection. He is the ultimate music afficianado.
1. Love: I hate to say it, but the hands-down through-the-years fave has got to be Elvis Costello
2. Cliff-worthy: A-MEN to whoever said Nickelback and Creed (dangit! Now I have a Nickelback song in my head)
3. Memory lane: NKOTB (that's right!) and Dramarama are good overall choices but the one song that ALWAYS takes me back is the Breeders' Cannonball--as in, it takes me back to a time that two BYU froshers figured out how to play the whole song with one guitar and a coffee mug and proceeded to show off said mad musical skillz to all of Q Hall.
4. New fave: Arcade Fire, Tegan & Sara (realizing neither is that new)
5. Darwinist: Cyndi Lauper and 10,000 Maniacs' Wishing Chair (from Uncle C--my intro to alt)
6. One word: Thanksgivingdinner
I'm sorry, my brain stopped comprehending at "we don't listen to country music"...*wink*
I seriously love all music...my favorite thing to do is browse iTunes for any and all. Anything that moves me, makes me happy.
1. Love the most today: I'm on a Rolling Stones kick this week, but wait a minute and that will change. I'm fickle.
2. Push off a cliff: Britney Spears
3. Back in time: Indigo Girls
Okay...there is a fly in the living room, my deathly-afraid-of-flies daughter needs my help. More later.
yay for cannonball!! I'd forgotten! BUT have you forgotten the Beastie Babes at Youth Conference? :)
First, can I ask what you were doing up at 4:37 AM when you commented on my blog?! Jk, i think i know!
My favorite thing about music is that you can not listen to something for YEARS, and when you hear it or bust out the old CD, you still remember every single word. I can also tell you what year a song came out by remembering what grade in high school i was in (or what year out of my five college years!)
1. Love the most ALWAYS: Smashing Pumpkins
2. Push off a cliff: I concur with Barenaked Ladies, but might also add Hootie and the freaking Blowfish
3. Back in time: Chicago
4. New Group: I live in the past, I can't even think of anyone I like now. Everyone sounds the same.
5. Music Evolution: Bad Religion, the first album I bought was "Suffer" and I think I own all of them now. Punk rock forever!
6. Picky
1. Love the most ALWAYS: Social Distortion and Pearl Jam
2. Push off a cliff: Creed, no doubt... I'd also nudge DMB.
3. Back in time: Bob Seger, NKOTB, Richard Marx and the Bangles
4. New Group: Against Me! is awesome... hmmm. Blue October, Rise Against (and by new, I mean last few years).
5. Music Evolution: Pearl Jam. I always liked music, but PJ was the first band that I liked even tho everyone else preferred something else (Nirvana). Oh, to be 10 again.
6. loverofallthingsthatsoundgoodtomedespitegenreorcoolfactor
oooh, i'm loving all the answers. even those who love country. i mean, it's a personal preference thing not a superiority complex. (though i will fight anyone who doesn't like radiohead. and i may or may not use my sweetest ninja moves.)
i, too, must tip my hate to my uncle C and my sisters for introducing me to the world of music beyond top 40.
but props to steph for admitting that richard marx takes her back in time. i mean, it's like he's always right there waiting for me.
he is, in fact, always right there waiting...
and i hope that you wanted to tip your HAT not your HATE!
good call.
HAT not hate.
that's what i get for typing and nursing.
i think it's called a TWN in police jargon.
I vaguely remember the Beastie Babes. I definitely remember the use of early No Doubt's "Let's Get Back" as the accompaniment to a certain tap-dancing final routine wherein matching outfits were employed to the awe of our classmates, none of whom wore matching outfits, and most of which used "The Good Ship Lollipop" for their routines.
Hee. Whatever happened to Richard Marx?
What a GREAT Hot Topic. Here goes...
1. Right now I am in LOVE with Keane. There is something about those guys that remind me of jr. high sock hops and hoping the cute boy (Garrett Torez) asks for a dance.
2. I HATE (and yes I know that is a strong word)INXS. Gag! I always change the station when they come on.
3. Morrissey/Depeche Mode/Ocean Blue/The Smiths always take me back to growing up in California.
4. Can't live without Gwen Stefani.
5. My musical revolution began with The Cure
6. The one word that describes my musical taste would have to be SASSY.
Oops #4 is a new artist...well I really like Carrie Underwood. Her CD is currently among my most played on my ipod.
allow me to introduce you to 'the country challenge'
rule 1: For 3 days, at all times you'd normally listen to other music, listen to country music. Or in your case, since you're not currently listening to much music, try turning it on -- while blogging, cleaning, cooking, feeding, driving. Yahoo radio's great.
rule 2: Under no circumstances may you listen to any other type of music during the 3 days of the country challenge.
rule 3: Follow rules 1 and 2 strictly.
If at the end of three days you still hate country music, you are allowed to tell others that you don't like country music, as you have actually given it a chance. However, this has never happened, b/c all people who hate country music have never really listened to it.
PS - If 'the country challenge' fails just watch a lot of CMT and you will be hooked.
Some excellent face melting hits to get you started on loving country:
Raining on Sunday - Keith Urban
Brass Bed - Josh Gracin
Would You Go with Me - Josh Turner
That's What I Love About Sunday - Craig Morgan
Don't tell my parents or my boss that I've posted here.
1. Always: The Clash
2. Death Sentence: Too many to mention! No one has said Train yet.
3. Time-Warp: Nirvana (partially because I haven't really listened to them since the 90s)
4. New Love: Against Me!
5. Big Change: Tie between:
a) discovering and rediscovering the Beatles
b) meeting someone who could play every Green Day song and deciding to learn to play guitar
6. One-word:
As for country...
No, you can't knock it 'til you've tried it. This is why old country and current alt-country are fine by me (check out Bonnie Prince Billy....really). Though, the very reason why I hate (not hat...HATE) anything on CMT or country radio today is because I've tried it...ask Steph and Angy. One can find more genuine emotion and less formulaic drivel in ...Oops I Did it Again than Toby Keith's entire career. OK, that sounds a little pompous. To each their own! It's perfectly fine to like new country... or Justin Guarini.
Where IS Justin and his lovely bob? Oh . . . wait . . . is it actually Mr. Dub in disguise?
Oh, and by the way Mr Crust Collector:
I am onto YOU.
I'm a little late ringing in with the rest...but I have to finish.
4. Name one new group/artist you can’t live without. Mika...my workouts go by SO fast!
5. Name one group/artist that started your musical evolution. Tears for Fears/Beastie Boys...the first "tapes" I bought.
6. Name one word that best describes your music tastes. Honesty... (if I had two words it would be "emotional honesty")
I'm with crust collector (now there's a phrase!) Old country and alt-country are where it's at. The Old 97s anyone?
I have listened to top 40 country and I have to confess: I just don't like it. It's so formulaic and manipulative. There are some standouts, like Nicklecreek and AKUS, but you could classify those as Bluegrass anyway.
Give me my Patsy Cline and Old 97s, thank you very much.
I've checked your blog on and off and I figured I'd comment on this one because it's very fun! (Great blog by the way.)
1. Love the most today: The Killers...love them so much my husband bought me a t-shirt with the band name on it!
2. Push off a cliff...no one really. I know it's so cliché to say I like everything, but I honestly do. I grew up listening to country whether it was current, blue grass or old time country and I like it all. My husband was big into rap when we dated in high school and I always liked it and I still don't mind the stuff from the '90s, but there are very few artists I enjoy today. I love emo and I can stand some screamo, but not much...none annoy me that bad that I would push them off a cliff though. I love punk and I'm a fan of rock. I even enjoy listening to System of a Down who is a very acquired taste and totally freaky, but can be fun if you are in the right mood. Ok, after going through most of the genre's I know who I would actually knock off a cliff...Slipknot. I can't stand there look, totally disgusting and freaks me out! Oh and I'm not a fan of Chinese opera either!
3. Back in time: Third Eye Blind. It reminds me of high school and my first year of college. I still love there first album. I went to 3 of there concerts and loved everyone.
4. New group: The Killers...they are new too.
5 Music Evolution: That's probably Third Eye Blind too. I always listened to country up until the time I get really into Alternative and 3EB was the one who did it for me. I still enjoy cruising to country when my hubbies not in the car, but I enjoy alternative, punk and emo just the same now.
6. One word to describe: illogical...it just doesn't make since that I could really stand to listen to just about anything.
Is it totally boring that I had duplicate answers twice?
wow.
my cup runneth over. (and is full of memories, music and many fabulous comments - even one by my only brother, the crustiest of collectors.)
good picks. good shares. how could we have forgotten train?
as for country - i fault no one for their personal music tastes. it's just that i've given it a try and it truly grates on my nerves. same with r&b. i just don't like my music slow unless there is some certain of intoxicating chorus that involves strange instruments.
although, sometimes the dixie chicks do make me smile. it's her voice, not so much the style of music.
drinks on me!
1. Postal Service (today)
2. the ocean blue (push off cliff)
3. Jane's Addiction/Grateful Dead/the samples (takes me back)
4. The Killers (new fav)
5. Duran Duran (started, first tape for Christmas in 1982)
6. Punk-hop
