Polar Plunge

Today is cold. Like, really cold. Like, so cold that your eyelashes freeze and police roam the streets encouraging people to head back inside.

Coincidentally, today is also the day that my
work participates in an annual "Polar Plunge" into Lake Michigan for charity. Though I'm usually the kind of idiot who signs up for that kind of thing, I managed to get beachside duty because the thought of getting into a swimsuit is a much greater deterent for me these days than frigid waters. Still, I was slated to spend 2-3 hours outside gathering donations for the Special Olympics. I didn't even know how to dress for the occasion since the current windchill temperature is -28. (Somehow a temperature can be less than nothing, though I'm still trying to wrap my brain around that one.)

Anyway, the good news is that my friend, Ms. Tea, just called and informed me that the event has been cancelled. (Actually, people have been jumping in every hour on the hour for the last day or so, but the remaining plunges are cancelled.) Apparently, there are huge chunks of ice washing ashore and cutting up the volunteers. Not that I'm happy to see a charity event lose out, but when it comes to me and my toes, I'd rather not risk frostbite.
